Lost trawler Mistress found on sea floor
The Point Judith, R.I., trawler Mistress, which sank in foul weather on New Year’s Day morning and triggered a large Coast Guard search for two of its crew, has been located, according to Richard Fuka, Rhode Island Fishermen’s Alliance president. Fuka said he’s been in regular contact with Michael Ansay, uncle of John Ansay, who along with the Mistress’s owner, Oscar Diaz, went missing when the trawler sank; both are presumed not to have survived. Retired Commercial Fisherman Mark Lee Roberts of Tillamook, Oregon, has passed away
After a long battle with cancer, we lost our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, Mark Lee Roberts. Mark was born in Portland, Oregon in 1952 to Harley and Irene Roberts. Mark grew up in SW Portland and attended St. Clare’s Catholic School and graduated from Central Catholic H.S. in 1970. He started commercial dory fishing with his father out of Pacific City in the Old Soak and Ragtag. He owned several dories including Shark Bait, Fish Assassin and Accomplice before acquiring a larger boat, the Pacific Mistress, which he commercial fished out of Depoe Bay. Mark was also part of the ODFW Marine Reserves Community Team, the Depoe Bay Near Shore Action Team, OSU Wave Energy participant, Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission member, and a longtime member of the Pacific City Dorymen’s Association. >>click to read<< 14:49
Parents of missing West Kingston fisherman sue owner of sunken trawler for negligence
New Year’s Day 2019 was cruel for the family of John Ansay Jr. They learned early that morning that a sudden gale and turbulent seas had overtaken the fishing trawler Ansay worked on. Thirty-one-year-old Ansay and the boat’s captain, Oscar Diaz, Ansay’s uncle, were missing. Diaz had put out a mayday call at 1:30 a.m. as the F/V Mistress began taking on water 2½ miles southeast of Block Island. Rescuers hold safety practice at offshore wind farm.
Offshore rescuers are sharpening their skills at and near the Block Island Wind Farm,,, But a Rhode Island commercial fishing group has said practicing on five turbines, all in a row, can’t be considered a real test for what is expected to be hundreds of wind turbines in grid patterns offshore south of Massachusetts and Rhode Island in the coming decade. “It’s not really a farm,” said Richard Fuka of the Rhode Island Fishermens Alliance. Coast Guard crews suspended their search for two missing fishermen near Block Island, Rhode Island Wednesday at approximately 5:13 p.m. The two fishermen have been missing since their boat Mistress capsized and sank Tuesday morning. The fishing boat Captain Bligh initially responded to the scene and rescued one fisherman from a lifeboat. Crews searched for approximately 72 hours covering 2,152 square nautical miles. -USCG-

Coast Guard treats search for fishermen as rescue mission
The U.S. Coast Guard said Wednesday that crews were continuing to search on the water and in the air for two fishermen reported missing. The Coast Guard said it considers the effort a rescue mission and that it assumes the fishermen put on survival suits. Capt. Oscar Diaz and his nephew, John Ansay, were aboard the F/V Mistress, which the Coast Guard said capsized and sank about 2.5 miles southeast of Block Island. Multiple Coast Guard crews and good Samaritans searched throughout the day Tuesday for two missing fishermen after their boat capsized and sank approximately two and half miles southeast of Block Island, Rhode Island.
The captain of the fishing vessel Mistress notified watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England at around 1:30 a.m. that the boat was taking on water.
The watch standers issued an urgent marine information broadcast to vessels in the area to request assistance for the crew of the Mistress.
The fishing boat Captain Bligh responded and rescued one crew member from a life boat. The remaining two crew members have not been located.
Low visibility and poor weather conditions hampered initial searches, but multiple crews launched as visibility improved.
The following crews searched a 375 square nautical mile area:
-Coast Guard Cutter Sanibel
-Coast Guard Cutter Steelhead
-Coast Guard Cutter Escanaba
-An Air Station Cape Cod MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and an HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft
-A 45-foot response boat from Station Point Judith
-A 47-foot Motor Lifeboat from Station Menemsha
Coast Guard Cutter Escanaba and Steelhead are expected to stay on scene through the night.

The Coast Guard along with a good Samaritan are searching for two missing fishermen after the fishing boat Mistress capsized Tuesday morning off Block Island, Rhode Island.
At approximately 1:30 a.m. the captain of the Mistress issued a mayday call stating the boat was taking on water near the Block Island Wind Farm.
The fishing boat Captain Bligh was nearby and responded to the scene first. The crew of the Captain Bligh rescued one fisherman and reported that the Mistress had capsized, and two fishermen were missing.
An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Cape Cod arrived on scene and began searching but encountered low visibility and unsafe weather conditions and was forced to return to base.
A 45-foot response boat from Station Point Judith also launched but was forced to turn around due to weather.
The 110-foot Coast Guard Cutter Sanibel and a 47-foot Motor Lifeboat from Coast Guard Station Montauk are en route to scene.
The winds were reported to be 30 to 35 knots and the seas 10 feet.
The Captain Bligh has remained on scene.
The Mistress is homeported out of Point Judith, Rhode Island.

Coast Guard crews tow disabled fishing boat to Point Judith, RI
Coast Guard crews towed a 52-foot disabled fishing boat safely to port in Point Judith, Rhode Island, Saturday morning. Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound command center watchstanders received a call via VHF-16 radio from the captain of Mistress reporting his boat was disabled due to a main engine casualty Friday at approximately 2:30 a.m. Mistress was 70 nautical miles east of Montauk, New York at the time. Consolidation: Greg Fulcher buys scallop vessel, permit from Oceans Fleet for $7m
Newport News, Virginia-based vessel operator Greg Fulcher has bought a scallop boat and license from Oceans Fleet Fisheries for $7 million, in the latest example of big money being spent in the US sector. At 92.1 feet long 171 metric tons gross tonnage, the Alaska was the largest vessel in the New Bedford, Massachusetts-based company’s fleet of 19 — now 18. “I also bought the Mistress last month, which is a part-time scallop boat.
