    PROTEST ALERT

“WALMART SWIMMING AGAINST THE TIDE ON ALASKA SALMON” SAY ALASKA

FISHERMEN AT PLANNED PROTEST OF WALMART

Demand change of Walmart policy that denies millions of Americans access to sustainable Alaskanseafood

    What

: In a massive show of strength, scores of hard working fishing families from across Alaska, along with other interested parties and representatives of the Alaska seafood industry, will converge

on Walmart’s South Anchorage store this Wednesday to demand the nation’s largest grocery retailer do what is right and correct its policy that denies millions of Americans access to the world’s gold

standard of sustainable seafood, Alaska salmon, and instead forces foreign salmon from Russia andelsewhere onto their plates. The protest will takes place one day before senior Alaska government officials will meet with Walmartsustainability executives to explain the comprehensive state fisheries management laws that Alaskahas followed and have made Alaskan seafood the international gold standard for responsiblymanaged fisheries for more than five decades

—including enabling this year’s most successful overall

salmon season in the history of Alaska.

    Who

: Available spokespeople from the participating Alaska fishermen include:

John Renner, Vice President, Cordova District Fishermen United (CDFU)

Greg Gabriel, President of the Northwest Alaska Seiners Association (NASA)

Jack Hopkins, Native Prince William Sound Fisherman

    When

    : 10:00AM (AKDT), Wednesday, September 4, 2013

    Where

: Walmart, 8900 Old Seward Hwy, Anchorage, AK

    Why

: Walmart, the largest grocery supplier in the U.S., shocked many earlier this year when itannounced its policy to only sell salmon products with sustainable certification labeling from aEuropean NGO that receives much of its funding from Walmart and its affiliated foundation. Thismonopolistic, profit-driven, anti-American, and anti-environmental policy means millions of U.S.consumers no longer have access to wild Alaska salmon, recognized around the world as the gold-standard in sustainably and responsibly managed fisheries, and which adheres to not only state andfederal sustainability guidelines but also United Nations Food & Agriculture Organization-basedResponsible Fisheries Management (RFM) Certification.###
