NILS STOLPE: The New England groundfish debacle (Part IV): Is cutting back harvest really the answer?
While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling. Thank you Amanda for sharing this tribute. Your father was my first cousin and more like my brother when we were children. We lived next door to each other our entire childhood. We shared our first and last days of school and every day in between. We spent many summers working together on our grandfathers lobster boat and I will keep those memories with me always. I can only tell you and the rest of our family how heartbroken I am to know that your Dad is not of this world anymore. He was wild and crazy, fearless and reckless and although he lived by his own set of rules, he lived with abandon and he would be the one I would want to have my back. My love and prayers go out to all of his children and grandchildren, my Aunt Betty, and my cousin Terry and her family. Kellie
