The New England groundfish debacle (Part III): who or what is at fault? Nils E. Stolpe/FishNet
NILS STOLPE: The New England groundfish debacle (Part IV): Is cutting back harvest really the answer?
While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling. BOEM’s proposed seismic surveys
Published on Jun 20, 2012 by Rossportsolidarityca Bjørnar Nicolaisen talks about "seismic shooting" and how this method of searching for oil and gas threatened to destroy the fishing industry of his hometown until Bernhardt and his comrades organised a campaign to stop the practice. Bjørnar states that co-existence between seismic surveys and a fishing industry is impossible. Bjørnar Nicolaisen is a fisherman who is the secretary of Norwegian fishermen's union Andøy Fiskarlag. http://bore-head007.newsvine.com/_news/2012/05/03/11525810-so-hey-have-you-heard-about-the-slaughter-that-lies-ahead-for-those-marine-mammals-weve-been-saving

Did You Know?
Commercial fishing is the deadliest job in the United States, topped by the fishermen in the Northeast's multi-species groundfish (cod, haddock, etc.) and Atlantic-scallop fisheries. They are 37 times more likely to die on the job than a police officer.
