Leona Aglukkaq, Nunavut’s MP and Canada’s Minister of Environment, had strong words against Greenpeace in her keynote address at the Inuit Circumpolar Council’s general assembly in Inuvik, N.W.T. “Inuit were victims of misinformation and lies spread by a group that had no regard for their impact on our way of life,” she said of Greenpeace’s campaign against the seal hunt.     Greenpeace’s unjust attacks on sealing destroyed their credibility in the North, justifiably. The disrespect shown to Inuit by the anti sealing activists is disgusting and hypocritical. It may not be that the Inuit have been so mislead as some may think, though. I am no friend of Greenpeace, they have to do a lot to redeem themselves for their unjust antisealing attacks in Canada. But the Inuit also know that they will have no say in fracking if some Southern company with the right political connections wants to do it. Perhaps the Inuit see cooperation with Greenpeace as a way to get some recompense for the damage Greanpeace’s anti sealing activities have been by getting some kind of protection from the powers that be.
