This will only work if the vessels have an AIS system onboard, & if they are transmitting their information. I don’t think that a vessel that is involved with Illegal, Unreported, & Unregulated fishing (IUU), is about to voluntarily transmit a signal that will basically be the equivalent to an ankle bracelet similar to that worn by convicted criminals.

Monitoring the vessels that are legally fishing by other non-governmental entities, & any interested parties, smacks of invasion of privacy. It is just a larger more technical version of our next civil problem, invasion of privacy by today’s camera equipped privately owned & operated octo-quad drones.

Once again, ENGO Oceana has found a way to put forward another money making scheme, at the detriment to the
commercial fishing industry, this time by bringing in the huge resources of Google into one of their messes.

Lets face the google fact, Jim, they already spy on the citizenry and even forward information to the NSA.
Oceana, the data manipulation specialists that always add a twist when sensationalizing any fishery issue, has created a mountain out of a mole hill, and now with the alliance of a tech group and Google are justifying what anyone would reject if the eye in the sky were pointed at themselves.
