I’ve been thinking about Bullard’s statement about promises, “No one promises anyone in the fishing industry a job for life.“…….. Read more

I don’t know anything about John Bullard, but reading that statement feels like a punch in the gut. When farmers’ crops fail due to drought can you imagine anyone saying “No one promises anyone a farming job for life”?!!

  2. Joel Hovanesian says:

Another arrogant bureaucrat who is totally out of touch and in the bag for the ecofrauds. I never trusted this empty suit politician.
Its time we the people started getting real and see what is happening.

These people in charge think they are the Longshanks of the world and the rest of us are merely peasants. If you don’t get what I’m saying I suggest you see the movie Braveheart.

And to the Longshanks wannabe’s I say GFY! Things are getting very interesting. When backed into a corner there’s only one way to go. When that time comes I wouldn’t want to be a Longshanks type. Our time is coming. I think I’ll join an organization such as the Oath keepers who see the tyranny and have had enough.

Yes it’s getting that bad out there folks.

  3. Jim Kendall says:

While John’s statement may be true for the fishing industry, apparently it doesn’t apply to NOAA/NMFS or the ENGOs?

    • Joel Hovanesian says:

Arrogance knows no bounds. If he doesn’t retract that statement and apologize he should be fired. Christ, Pat K is starting to look good again.

  4. Toby Lees says:

Jim , stay out of it you dont no the codend from the wing end, when it comes to groundfish! Would you want your boys on the 35 plus year old draggers or

a new 120 ft. brand new trawler that can harvest some quota??

Hello Toby, and welcome to your fisherynation.com.

“Use this website to tell your story’s, post your articles, voice your opinions, raise your issue’s, and to interact with fishermen and industry members. We have the tool’s to organise members by regions for those members to discuss their issues. We have the tools to implement the democratic process, regionally and nationally. This website is your tool for fixing all that is wrong, but if people leave the tool in the drawer, the ones that are fixing things up to suit themselves will fix it for them, not you.”

You will notice that your two previous comments didn’t make it into the discussion, as I considered them personal attack’s. Those comments won’t be tolerated towards me, or you, or anyone else.

If you’ve got something to say, say it without the insults. I’ll post it.

The post was about Bullards statement, and the first thing you say is “Jim, stay out of it?” Stay out of what, Toby, a public forum discussing a statement by John Bullard?

Jim Kendall is as you know, very informed on fishery issues, not just scallop issues.

As far as my boys, I’d rather they not have a huge chunk of their settlement stolen for rent payments to the fish lords.

I guess what we called fish is now called quota.

      It sounds so,,,,,,unfish.

    Well put.
    Give us our GD referendom.

    • Joel Hovanesian says:

Toby, all I know is what I see. And what I see is this. This industry has been divided into two camps. The haves and the have nots. I don’t think this was done by accident. It’s classic divide and conquer methodology. Add an element of greed to it and a sense of self rightiousness and this is what you get.

You know full well what I told you in the past. I was probably the first to tell you that I didn’t blame you for doing what you did. You even thanked me for saying it. Do you remember that?

I still feel that way. I can’t blame you for basically accepting a golden parachute as you get older and closer to retirement. You may think I and people like me are just jealous of the position you are in. Trust me, thats not the case. The problem I have with this whole thing boils down to whats right and whats wrong. Again this is my oppinion. However I believe this oppinion is shared by the vast majority of fishermen. If they gave us our refferendum we wouldn’t even be having this disscusion. But thats another story. That didn’t happen beacause the power brokers at NOAA know how that would have turned out so they play games with words and circumvent the law.

You know as well as I do that when we started fishing nothing like this resource giveaway/ retirement plan was ever remotely considered. With lots of games with words, the powers that be can make these divisive plans look like the greatest thing since sliced bread.
But if we are truly honest with ourselves we know what the effects of these programs will be. A young fisherman today will never be afforded the same opportunities that you and I were given. Will never be able to work his way up the ranks and see the dream of owning his own boat as a free man, a free american. Can you imagine back when you started out having to pay for fish before you even got a chance to catch them? What would you have said to that?

Again I hold no remorse towards you for accepting your government handout. Take it and be happy. However don’t ever insult my intelegence by trying to convince me that this plan that favors so few at the expense of so many is the best we can do. Look at the discourse here on these pages. It’s proof positive that their divide and conquer plans are working to a T.

We have met the enemy, and they are us!

Strip the Council of their antitrust exemption. Let ’em meet in prison.

How much longer will Alaskans allow their public servants to engage in anti-trust activities?

Until the most important man on the totem pole is treated unfairly?

If we can’t bust the hold that the Council has on the fisheries industry in Alaska, then something is terribly wrong with our system.

Oh Alaska, Alaska, crooked state Alaska.

Civilian employees can be easily bribed with over inflated salaries for minimal qualifications.

That’s the infestation of all agencies that are suppose to provide services to the people. Workers with an extreme lack of gray matter making it easy for a handful to remain in control.

Oh Alaska, Alaska, crooked state Alaska.

I guess they gave the Council antitrust protection is that nobody really trusts them at all. Give any group of people a license to steal and that is precisely what will eventually occur. In the beginning the thefts were more tentative. But now they are blatant and egregious.
These people belong in prison. And except for the exemption would be handily convicted by any jury in the land. Bill Allen is a piker in comparison. Not fit to shine their shoes.

What’s the matter with “speculative entry” Juneau’s been doin it for decades.

Then NOAA, now buys em back, landing bigger shares under Magnusen Stevens.

F/V Speculator…where history always counts, except for yesterdays.

The Council empowers the large factories afloat. They hire foreign workers to not only assure low wges but also to prevent unionization. Processors are actually loosing money when the ship isn’t fishing or catching little. Communities are estranged from the wealth at the waters edge. The family fishing operation is as threatened as the family farm. The whole sscheme of social engineering this corporatist Council is implementing is an economic assault on coastal communities and ultimately Alaska itself as more & more quota ownership is held out of state. They must be held legally responsible for the rampant conflict of interest endangering our way of life. Immunity fron prosecution under antitrust law has led to immunity for economic prostitution of Alaska’s marine resources.

Where is the Real Federal enforcement? Not NOAA and NMFS.
Investigate the NMFS Alaska Division and NPFMC. And it’s ties to Processor’s and Trawler’s

The less people know, the easier it is for a handful to get away with unfair practices. The more people know, the harder. Alaskans are becoming ‘in the know’ and we’re crying out ‘unfair, unfair, unfair’!

Compare the Council system to the Jack Abramoff scandal.

Had Abramoff been a council member everything he did would be legal.

We all figure if we can just get someone from our gear group on it will be ok. It doesn’t work that way.

Every vote is an opportunity to make more money for the voting members of the council. They can and do take on new clients all the time. Voting member suddenly become Trident lobbyists.

Any talk of conflict of interest is punished.

whoa, they should rename this Conspiracy Theorist’s Central. You guys have no idea how fishery laws work. This ain’t done for the good of Alaska, people. I’m not in favor of the bigtime trawl companies but get your head out of the sand.

Right, everyone knows that nobody has ever conspired to obtain unfair fishing industry profits. Nobody associated with the fishing industry would ever do anything like that. Could not happen.

Like he says, get your heads out of the sand you guys.

joel, you are a good man.this all started back in 96. thats when NMFS handed out token gifts called Fleet Days at Sea! You must rember!! This is the voice that has gotten out of control! Leave the traditional groundfishierman alone!

    • Toby, I remember what your talking about. I won’t get into token gifts.

However, I believe a strong argument can be made that the “traditional ground fishermen” are the ones who have been hurt the most by these plans. Christ look at what has happened in Gloucester and NB with their traditional boats. I believe the stats would back it up.

  8. Toby Lees says:

Joel, please here me! the problem is not the price of the quota! (cheap) its the fuel, and the dockside price of fish! Under the catch share sytem an auction gives the dealers a licences to steal!! WE need to meet up! bring who ever he is bore head what to see the face!!

  9. Toby Lees says:

Joel, this is real, i paid as much as $1250 for 1 day at sea!! And kicked over more fish than i brought home!! Please dont tell me this system is not better than DAS! they were hard to get the last couple of years. 2 groups owned them! Thats the con!!

    • Joel Hovanesian says:

And now a handfull of entities own the fish. Whats the difference?

Young guys coming along are not going to have a shot and I think that’s wrong.

  10. Toby Lees says:

Jole, please stop backing up the part time and fair weather ground fishierman! On the settlement i toke more for DAS, than boats as of now for Quota lease . Quota is not the problem, its fuel, and dockside price!! Go to work. Ihave fishiermen friend that are making $$$ under this system!

    • Joel Hovanesian says:

Thats just it Toby, I thought we were all fishermen, Regardless of how we chose to go about it. I guess others think otherwise.

    • philips66 says:

A little bird told me that Toby is one of the Catch Shares scam “winners”. So Toby, why do you hate on the little guys like this? Don’t you know, once the big green mafia is done using you, yourself and the winners will be the next ones forced out of business?

      • borehead - Moderator says:

pkii, I’m thinkin’ everyone know’s there ain’t no winners in New England.

        • philips66 says:

There wouldn’t have been as many losers if some fishermen didn’t become the useful idiots for the big green mafia. The winners are really losers, and the losers lose too. They saw some winners down in Chatham. Divided and conquered!

  11. Toby Lees says:

Joel, please., not to get all bunched up! What in this world do you know that gets rewarded? The doers or the not doers! Let it go, I will never let the voice of the none doers take away from me with out a fight!!

    • Thats just it Toby, you haven’t, nor would you have anything taken away from you.

The same can’t be said for those who have lost everything or are on the verge of loosing it all. Exactly what you are worried about happening to you HAS happened to those guys. No sense going any further with this.

We’ll just have to agreee to disagree with this whole concept. All the best and good luck.

  12. Toby Lees says:

Joel, please , lets look at this a different way , look at the squid gig. you what to open up a can of worms??? Peace out Dude! let the ground fish go away! still want to meet your buddy Borehead, i will buy lunch!

  13. Toby Lees says:

Jole , get rid of the for ever endind coment! We need to talk , bring borehead, leave the guns home!
