Back when European colonists first began arriving on North American shores, hoping to build viable communities in a land that promised seemingly endless land and opportunity, they were following a fish. Long before anyone thought seriously of living here, fishermen from Spain, France and England had been making the perilous journey to the Grand Banks off Maine and the Maritime Provinces to spend the summer catching tens of thousands of the perfect fish — the cod.
