Letter: NOAA can never take away fishermen’s souls

Because I found that I — no, we — could no longer make a difference.

Our sacrifices, our input, our expertise, our faith in the process and rule of law, have all been dismissed as “anecdotal input”, hardly worth the paper it was printed on, let alone the postage.

How do you lose trust that never was? How do you create a disaster out of a cyclical alteration of species abundance and distribution? How do you deliberately dismember a living, breathing, vibrant, tradition? How do you attempt to callously expunge the innate character of communities which pre-date the revolution?

It’s pretty simple — just go to work for NOAA.

One thing that I must make perfectly clear to these people, however, is that — while you may take away our jobs, our boats, our permits, our homes — you’ll never take our souls. You see, “Gloucestermen keep on fishin’” — even when we can’t!

So sad and so unnecessary. Shame on those who have been responsible for this destruction/genocide of our fishermen and their communities.

Beware of the karma that no doubt awaits those responsible.
