Despite possible $100 million in aid, tough regs mean …Fishermen trying to stay afloat

Gloucester fisherman Paul Vitale’s job is on the line.

New England legislators are lobbying for $100 million to save next year’s groundfish fishery season in the wake of a disaster declaration, but that isn’t easing Vitale’s uncertainty about his industry’s future.

“There’s three households earning money off of my shoulders,” said Vitale, 40, captain of the 50-foot “Angela + Rose” and a father of three. “We never know day to day what’s happening.”

Kerry wastes no time when stealing money for Uncle Drunkle Kennedy's shrine, but when actual families need a helping hand all they get is "we'll try". It's time we rid ourselves of these do nothing, self serving pols and start voting for folks who will work for US.

but not this..A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. No farm subsidies and no fish subsidies. When times were good, these fisherman fished-out the oceans. There are too many boats and not enough fish. Find something else to do. The taxpayers don't owe these guys a living.

DRACUL…..Brilliant comment. Why don't these fishermen stop fooling with the ocean and become brain surgeons. There are plenty of people that need brainwork….like maybe yourself!

I have to agree with " dracul" on this one . I have a friend who 15 years ago as a fisherman realized that the industry had no future. He took advantage of program offered to re-train fisherman in other industries and has prospered .

Fishing is with Rod and Reel

if you can't survive with rod and reel then get out the industry..

After nearly 30 years in the fish business, I met few who were capable of following your friend's path. Generally, I do not agree with subsidizing ANY commercial interest. But this "industry," which has changed little in the past 2-3 centuries, must be preserved. Watching the Gloucester shore become a Fanueil Hall would be criminal.

I agree with your assessment that Gloucester becoming Fanuel Hall would be a negative . Although if it brought more real jobs to the area it might change my view.I don't pretend to know the answer for the Fishing industry but as in any business you want to grow and do better, hasn't fishing shot itself in the foot. Better techniques, better equipment, more time on the water seems to have depleted the stock or inventory as it were. It appears to be overly regulated now , but is that in response to overfishing , you tell me ?
