NOAA: 2012 was warmest year ever for US, second most ‘extreme’

I’m not a warmist, denier, skeptic, but I sure have a hard time believing anything NOAA.

If you found yourself bundling up in scarves, hats, and long underwear less than usual last year, you weren’t alone: 2012 was the warmest year on record in the contiguous United States, according to scientists with The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Read moredouche bag

Advocates decry holes in safety net for Maine fishing industry

PORTLAND — Advocates said they were baffled when one of the first serious attempts at improving fishing industry safety was stripped down in an annual act passed quietly last month. The U.S. Coast Guard Re-authorization Act ovalientf 2010 provision requiring all commercial fishing vessels operating more than three miles from the coast to have dockside inspections by Oct. 16, 2012, was extended to Oct. 15, 2015, by the latest 2012 act, which became law on Christmas Eve. The revision also extends the amount of time required between inspections from two years to five. Read More

If everything you know about shrimp fishing comes from watching “Forrest Gump,” one thing is certain: You don’t know much about shrimp fishing.

“The difference between us and our competitors is that we pack and sell our own shrimp,” said Alex Laperouse, who is part of the Piazza sales force. “We know our sources personally. And that means we can better control quality and consistency.”

Piazza’s president, Kristen Baumer, said the company’s approach reflects U.S. consumers’ growing desire to know the source of their food, how it is handled and what measures are taken to safeguard it. Read More

Lobster Landings Set New Record, But Lobstermen Aren’t Cheering

The good news: Maine lobstermen landed more lobsters than ever before — hauling in some 123,305,642 pounds of the state’s signature crustacean. That is about 18 million pounds more than 2011’s previous record-setting catch of about 104.9 million pounds.

The bad news: despite the huge increase in landings (until 1990 or so Maine’s total annual lobster landings averaged about 20 million pounds) the value of the catch was some $331 million. That’s a drop of about $3.7 million (or a little more than 1 percent) compared with 2011.  Read more

Subject: SAFMC March meeting – Chris McCaffity

I am not happy at all about this. The council is playing games with our lives and resources. I know NONE of them will have the honor or courage to debate me. They are spineless cowards!
Why is Kate Quigley getting ANOTHER chance to pitch her/SAFA/EDF catch share scheme to the council?
