NROC Comment on the Draft Ocean Planning Goals by Dr Damon E. Cummings, Ph.D. Ocean Engineering, Gloucester, MA,

6/27/2013 – I found your comment form far too restrictive for what I wish to say and therefore have written this memo.,,, and so begins an excellent comment from Dr. D E Cummings to the Northeast Regional Ocean Council, which he allowed me to share. I only wish there were more people that cared about the big picture, and recognize it for what it really is. Damon Cummings does, and he spoke up for fishermen. Thank you.  Link to the comment.  NROP comment form

CF/V Ryan’s Commander case dismissed in federal court -Family sued makers of boat involved in tragic sinking off Cape Bonavista

Vessel design and poor handling caused the capsizing of the Ryan’s Commander that claimed the lives of two Newfoundland fishermen, a federal report concludes.  The Transportation Safety Board of Canada also found that communications between two federal departments remains so strained that crew safety is at risk.  Brothers Joe and Dave Ryan died when their vessel overturned off Cape Bonavista on Sept. 19, 2004, only months after it was completed. Four men escaped the disaster. @thetelegram   Interesting info @neelychaulk.com

Uncle vs. nephew in marine-life criminal case

Two members of an Idaho family are scheduled to appear at the Key West federal courthouse one day apart in September, but the relatives might not be on speaking terms. Few waters contain a more baffling hodgepodge of fishing rules than the Florida Keys

Recreational and commercial fishing in South Florida waters falls under the jurisdiction of three government agencies: The federal South Atlantic Fishery Management Council and the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council, and the state FWC. Then toss in rules for the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, Everglades National Park, Biscayne National Park, national wildlife areas and species-specific closed areas. @keysnet

The debate over catch limits and quotas for elvers in Maine and other Atlantic states

The board of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission will meet Wednesday in Virginia to decide whether to move ahead on its working group’s recommendations or incorporate details not included in the most recent management plan. At stake is a fishery that’s worth tens of millions of dollars a year in Maine alone, with baby eels often selling for $2,000 a pound or more. @kennebecjournal

Warm waters killed chinook in Oregon’s John Day River in July. Even Idaho’s Salmon River got too hot. Can the fish adapt quickly enough?

Research shows that salmon avoid water that’s warmer than 68 degrees. For years temperatures in the Columbia River have exceeded that for brief periods in the summer. But from July 22 to July 28, water temperatures reached at least 70 at four federal dams on the Columbia and Snake rivers that are passable to salmon. @idahostatesman.com
