76-foot F/V Neptune sinking, fuel spill in Haines, Alaska – Coast Guard responds

uscg-logoWatchstanders at Sector Juneau received a report from the Haines harbormaster of the sunken vessel early Saturday.  The harbormaster reported the vessel was discharging fuel and that boom had been placed around the vessel to contain the spill. more@uscgnews  19:34

Kent Md. Poacher convicted of overfishing striped bass

According to a news release from the office of Maryland Attorney General Douglas Gansler, state Natural Resources Police began an investigation after receiving information that Pierce had been using fishing licenses that did not belong to him during the striped bass season in January and February of 2011. Striped bass regulations from 2011 allowed Pierce to catch the daily legal limit of 300 pounds per striped bass allocation. There also was a maximum permitted allotment for total catch per boat of 1,400 pounds per day. more@myeasternshore 14:39

Government Shutdown: Feds Try to Close the OCEAN Because of Shutdown

Just before the weekend, the National Park Service informed charter boat captains in Florida that the Florida Bay was “closed” due to the shutdown. Until government funding is restored, the fishing boats are prohibited from taking anglers into 1,100 square-miles of open ocean. Fishing is also prohibited at Biscayne National Park during the shutdown. more@breitbart  13:30

The muddy bottom of the Igushik River maintains its firm grasp on the F/V Lone Star

This past Friday, as the crews attempted to place the chains around the front and back ends of the boat, they ran into this newest problem. The front section of the Lone Star has been lodged so deeply into the mud that it became impossible to wrap a chain around it using traditional divers. more@bristolbaytimes  13:07

Sanfilippo, along with Gloucester fishing boat owners Sam Novello, Tommy Testaverde and Joe Randazzo, helped initiate the proposal. Their proposal seeks about $200,000 for research into expanding the harvesting of whiting by opening a currently-closed portion of the fishery near Stellwagen Bank grounds. more@GDT 08:30
