That’s according to the latest Economic Trends by the state Labor Department.  The report also looks at how much time goes into gear work, and what jobs fishermen do during the off times. more@fishradio  19:38

The Canadian Independent Fish Harvesters Federation is made up of fishermen’s organizations from six provinces: Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and British Columbia. Christian Brun, president of the federation, says the group will work with governments to ensure that fisheries policies support actual fishermen. “Our main concern is to promote the independent, small-business, community based approach to fishing in Canada,” Brun said in a news release. more@thetelegram  16:28

No one thought that giving one group of selected wealthy individuals their own special quota in the guise of conservation would lead to the demise of the groundfish fleet on Gloucester. But, yes, the greed-driven thugs got ideas as to how they could steal the resource for themselves. Getting federal aid for Maine shrimpers

maine shrimpIt’s too soon to say if any aid will be given to the shrimpers, although according to a representative from the Maine Department of Marine Resources, Maine’s congressional delegation has reached out to see if there is anything that can be done to help the fishermen. FAIRBANKS — Commercial fishermen experience the highest rate of occupational fatalities and second highest rate of non-fatal occupational injuries of any job in the state of Alaska, according to a bulletin released Thursday by the state Department of Epidemiology.<em> more@newsminer   10:28

Alabama man admits shooting dolphin in Mississippi Sound

GULFPORT — A commercial boat captain from Bayou La Batre, Ala., has pleaded guilty to shooting a dolphin with a shotgun in the Mississippi Sound in the summer of 2012. Brent Buchanan faces maximum penalties of one year in prison and a $100,000 fine at his sentencing on Feb. 24. more@sunherald  09:55
