Seward tops commercial fisheries – Wolfgang Kurtz
While Homer, Kodiak and Seward continue to compete for the top spot in commercial halibut landings this year, Seward has taken a big lead when sablefish is added into the mix.,,,Between halibut and sablefish, commonly called black cod, Seward has more pounds of fish landed so far this season than Homer and Kodiak combined. Scientists map sea floor off NC for potential wind energy
“North Carolina reportedly has some of the best conditions for wind in the Southeast United States,” said Chris Taylor, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration research ecologist at the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science lab in Beaufort. “Our proximity to the Gulf Stream promotes relatively consistent strong winds that can have the potential for producing energy if utilized in the right way.” (what bullshit this is.) Herring and haddock fishermen at odds over bycatch
Fishermen in two of the most lucrative fisheries in the Northeast — Atlantic herring and haddock —are at odds over the management of fishing in Georges Bank, a key nerve center for both species. Atlantic herring fishermen who fish from mid-water trawl boats are on track this year to exceed their limit for incidental catch of haddock in Georges Bank, off the coast of New England, federal regulators said. That would trigger rules that would effectively shut down the herring fishery. Read more here 11:39
Asian carp invasion a growing problem
No one really dreams anymore of completely ridding the Wabash River of invasive, destructive — and, let’s be honest, ugly-looking — Asian carp, a voracious breed of fish that grows quickly, reproduces rapidly and vacuums up so much microscopic plankton that it can starve out native species higher up the food chain. EASTPORT, Maine — Millennium Marine is up and running in Eastport, building boats for the fishing industry and other applications after setting up shop in vacant space of an industrial building. Red’s Best is a Boston-based fish processor which caters to several fishermen fishing in the Gulf of Maine. For the pilot program, UNH Dining will be purchasing seafood from Red’s Best due to their capability of meeting the demands of the university and their support of NH fishermen through the Yankee Fishermen’s Cooperative.
