Cook Inlet leads Agenda Change Requests for fish board

In addition to nine Cook Inlet requests, five address Bering Sea tanner crab and Norton Sound king crab, three ask for changes to Kuskokwim River salmon fisheries, and two address Yukon River salmon fisheries. There are also two proposals each for Bristol Bay salmon fisheries, Southeast herring and Pacific cod, as well as one relating to purse seine lengths. Read more here  10:18

Cook Inlet fish wars, APOC receives about 200 complaints primarily from commercial fishermen, reject 198, will hear three

Kenai Peninsula and Anchorage residents with ties to Cook Inlet commercial fisheries — including United Cook Inlet Drift Association Executive Director Roland Maw — submitted the complaints to the commission Aug. 25 regarding the Kenai River Sportfishing Association’s Kenai River Classic and other outreach and lobbying of public officials regarding fisheries management. Tagged in New York, Killed in Costa Rica: Beamer the Shark

Beamer was a blue shark that used to enjoy swimming in the chilly waters off Montauk, New York. Last year, Beamer began swimming south towards the Caribbean and made it to the eastern Antilles by Christmas. The shark then made a straight swim towards Puerto Limon in Costa Rica; alas, Beamer ended up hooked on  the lines of a commercial fishing boat somewhere between Portete and Moin. New Zealand: Commercial fishing ban in new marine parks – creates new recreational fishing parks

Commercial fishing would be banned from the inner Hauraki gulf and the entire Marlborough Sounds if National creates new recreational fishing parks for those areas. Mr Key said compensation would likely be paid to affected commercial fishers, which could cost up to $20 million. New Brunswick: Brian Gallant vows to expand international lobster markets

New Brunswick’s Liberal leader is promising to introduce a lobster levy and work to expand international lobster markets if elected later this month. Brian Gallant said Saturday a Liberal government would partner with harvesters and processors to expand markets in Europe and Asia. Maine, N.H. fish survey gets low count – Pew Climate Denier Jud Crawford Weigh’s In!

The lack of some species, and the low overall catch, aren’t necessarily indicative of a decline in a species’ population, said Keri Stepanek, one of the scientists involved in the survey.
