Texas Game Wardens on Border Make Large Gillnet Seizure

Texas game wardens conducting an enhanced marine patrol of the lower Rio Grande near Boca Chica along the Texas–Mexico border recently seized roughly 8,000 feet of illegal gillnet. Though no arrests were made, the gillnet is believed to have belonged to commercial fishermen from Mexico. Fishing with a gillnet in Texas waters is a violation of state law. An evening aboard the “Wild Alaskan,” a Bering Sea crab boat turned strip club

With Monday’s news that state regulators had revoked the liquor license of the Wild Alaskan in Kodiak, most people will likely never be able to answer the following question: Just what, exactly, is a floating strip club like? But after a trip to Kodiak to cover a U.S. Senate candidate debate in early October, I happen to be uniquely positioned to shed a little light into the dark corners of the 120-foot converted Bering Sea crabbing boat. Higher lobster catches, quality reported in some western NS areas

morning mistSome lobster buyers say fishermen are bringing in large catches of high quality lobsters across western Nova Scotia in the first few days of the crucial fall fishery. Michael Cotter, of Cotter’s Ocean Products in Lockeport, says the quality of the lobsters coming from District 33 is the highest he’s seen in more than eight years. The Oregon Dungeness commercial crab fishing season started on time this year

“It’s been delayed the last two years, but this year we’ve got a Dec. 1 opener,” Hugh Link said last week. Link, the executive director of the Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission, said the opening is set by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and is based, up and down the coast, on the percentage of fill rate of the crab. Two N.C. fishermen behind bars -Found with more than 16 times the legal possession limit of red drum

Fishermen hold protest in St. Anthony

During a peaceful protest, the group was able to halt crews from working on the docked factory freezer Ocean Prawns. Similar to a protest held earlier this year in Corner Brook, fishermen are asking the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) to reconsider the policy, (LIFO) which saw inshore fishermen shoulder 90 per cent of a 10,000-tonne cut in 2014. Pacific states say tuna talks making slow progress

Pacific island states expressed frustration Wednesday at a lack of progress in talks aimed at protecting the region’s valuable tuna resources, accusing powerful faraway fishing nations of stalling on conservation measures. The islands want the annual meeting of the influential Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) in Samoa to cut tuna quotas in the region, which is the source of almost 60 percent of the global catch. China, Japan block Antarctic fisheries regulation as rorts continue – Sea Shepherds to Ride Herd!

Korean authorities found a fleet of three ships fabricated catch documents and ship tracks, apparently with Russian help,,,Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) shows. Questions, about official scientific observers from Russia aboard the Insung ships who reported “anomalous” fishing data. Lake Charles, LA Local shrimper hauls in unusual catch

Cinnamon river shrinpRaymond Leday was shrimping under the Interstate 10 bridge Monday afternoon when he pulled in something rarely seen in these parts. Leday said at first he thought it was a mutation or a crossbreed between a shrimp and a crawfish. He brought the catch to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries office in Lake Charles and they identified it as a cinnamon river shrimp. Read the rest here 08:50
