Kristine Kaiser: I see offshore oil-drilling coming to N.C.

Gov. Pat McCrory recently hosted a closed-door meeting with elected officials and oil industry representatives about the practice. Environmentalists and stakeholders were not invited. , touting many new jobs. Sometimes I think that Gov. McCrory isn’t at all happy with the state that he leads. He always wants to do a makeover. 5 Fishermen Rescued by the Coast Guard when vessel runs aground on the Columbia River – Video

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Columbia River received a distress call at 2:16 a.m. from the fishing vessel Titan Titan aground, Columbia Rivercrew stating that they had grounded and were taking on water in their engine room. The watchstanders directed the launch of the MLB crew from Cape Disappointment and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Astoria, Oregon. Read the rest here 14:44 Video here

Coast Guard saves disabled clam boat near Provincetown

A Coast Guard crew from Station Point AllertonUSCG, Massachusetts, assisted a disabled clam boat 11 miles northwest of Provincetown, Massachusetts, Friday. At about 8:30 p.m., Thursday, the four-person crew aboard the 40-foot Angel Fisher notified Coast Guard Sector Boston that their boat lost steering. Read the rest here 14:05

Two Fishermen Rescued after being adrift at sea for five months!

Two emaciated fishermen were recovering in a Pacific hospital today after enduring a five month ordeal drifting helplessly in an open boat. The Papua New Guinea fishermen told officials in the town of Pohnpei in the Caroline Islands that they had survived by eating raw fish and drinking rainwater. A third man died two weeks before the rescue. No details have been on what became of him. Read the rest here 13:32

Eco Imperialists WWF, Greenpeace – Disappointing Outcome at Pacific Fisheries Meet

Delegates from Pacific Island nations had planned to form a united force at the Samoa meeting, calling on the body that manages the fishery to urgently adopt a number of conservation measures at its annual meeting. Greenpeace is reporting than none of the measures were adopted. Journalists were not permitted to attend the final session of the meeting. Read the rest here 11:42

Samuel D. Rauch III is the Deputy Assistant Administrator for Regulatory Programs for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the government agency that manages every fishery in the country, in Rauch’s words, “from the Virgin Islands to the Northern Marianas to Alaska to Hawaii.” Rauch had to testify before Congress on Thursday about what many critics have characterized as the mismanagement of red snapper fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, including off of Alabama’s Gulf Coast.  It did not go well. On the death of Philip Boudreau – A streak of sunlight over Petit-de-Grat

Phillipe BoudreuOn June 1, 2013, Philip Boudreau, 43, was killed, allegedly by three lobster fishermen from the Acadian fishing village of Petit-de-Grat, N.S., on Isle Madame. News reports also described Mr. Boudreau as a fisherman. Well, not exactly. He was a Cape Breton original – a poacher and a thief, a rustic Robin Hood with a deep affection for dogs and children. His rap sheet ran nearly 11 pages, but he was not particularly acquisitive. One neighbour says he would “steal the beads off Christ’s moccasins” – then give the booty away to someone in need. Eight more bodies Thursday, 20 have been recovered from Bering Sea S. Korea trawler sinking

Eight more bodies, including that of two Filipinos, were recovered Thursday from the area where a South Korean trawler sank in the Bering Sea off  Russia’s far east coast, leaving 33 crew members still missing, officials said. Read the rest here  07:31

Fisherman say proposed Designated Habit Research Area on Stellwagon Bank would put them out of business

NOAA ScientistOfficially it was a public hearing on the Omnibus Essential Fish Habitat Amendment 2. Unofficially, it was scientists versus fishermen. The scientists say they are updating, as required by law, their long-standing Essential Fish Habitat (EFH) designations.
