Shrimp stock decline widespread, research shows

maine shrimpAschan pointed out research shows the world cold water prawn stocks are declining. She said there are larger and expanding cod stocks and predation by young cod reduces shrimp recruitment to the fishery. The actions of NMFS and NOAA are going to create a significant negative financial impact to our local fishermen, but many other businesses that support and finance the fishing industry. Lake Erie Commercial fishing done for the year

Even though the species have changed over the years, Lake Erie has long hosted a valuable commercial fishing industry.  The first fish caught in commercial quantities included muskellunge and northern pike, before moving on to whitefish varieties and then members of the perch family. Greenpeace and Cornish fishermen lobby George Eustice MP over unfair fishing quota

“We don’t want this money. I don’t want this money,” said gillnetter Chris Cameron. “We’re in a time when people are trying to make a living. We’re talking about two thousand dollars here. That doesn’t do nothing.” Jim Wells, president of the gillnetting group Salmon for All, told commissioners fishermen testing out alternatives to gillnets haven’t been successful. Animal welfare organizations in B.C. are furious over the stolen teeth from their dead orca

The young adult female whale was found floating off the coast Thursday and had been brought ashore. “Someone last night selfishly, cruelly, illegally cut off several teeth from her,” Marcie Callewaert of the Victoria Marine Science Association told CTV. “It’s a crime that can’t be described. Dischner: Another year of halibut quota cuts on the table for 2015 (lots of info)

Pacific halibut fishermen could have a reduced catch next year if the International Pacific Halibut Commission opts to go with the “blue-line” projection released Dec. 2, but Alaskan fishermen in some areas may see a slightly higher quota than in 2014. The blue-line projection calls for a coastwide catch of about 25.02 million pounds million pounds, and total fishery removals of 38.72 million pounds. Read the rest here 13:12

“If there is financial influence that’s trying to push for a project that should not be funded, it would be terribly disappointing because it should be not about winning but doing what’s right,” said Bonnie Brady, executive director of the.
