Study: Patient Fishermen Could See Bigger Revenue, Healthier Shrimp Fisheries
A Duke University study says North Carolina coastal fishermen could make more money and preserve the shrimp fishery, if they’d wait until late in the season for the big catch. Duke Environmental Economics Professor Martin Smith is a lead author of the study. He analyzed State Marine Fisheries data showing fishing vessel size, the size of the catch, and what it sold for on a daily basis over six years. Read the rest here 23:11
NOAA appoints members to Marine Protected Areas Federal Advisory Committee
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), in consultation with the Department of the Interior, has appointed ten new members to the Marine Protected Areas (MPA) Federal Advisory Committee. Knowing the age compositions of marine stocks is crucial to sound management. Fish can be aged easily by examining their earbones or scales. Not so with crabs, because they molt. For years it’s been assumed that crab that don’t retain their hard parts throughout their lifetime due to growth by molting at which they lose their lose their exoskeleton and it was always assumed everything went with that. U.S. Coast Guard hands off massive Bering Sea search to South Korea
The U.S. Coast Guard has transferred search duties in the Bering Sea sinking of a fishing vessel to South Korea’s navy, with more than two dozen people still missing. Coast Guard spokesman Petty Officer 1st Class Shawn Eggert said Monday that members of the Republic of Korea Navy have assumed full responsibility in the search for crew members of the Oryong 501. Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries – Seven accused of taking oysters illegally
Seven men were ticketed over the past month for taking oysters from public waters near Dularge while the harvesting season is closed, authorities said. The violations occurred on the Sister Lake Public Oyster Seed Reservation in November and December, according to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. Read the rest here 16:19

Work doesn’t really feel like work for Adam Toler, for he spends six days a week surrounded by the Mississippi Sound. He and his small crew leave the Pass Christian Harbor around sunrise each morning and return in the early afternoon with sacks of oysters to sell to seafood dealers as soon as they hit the harbor launch again. Waters Warm, and Cod Catch Ebbs in Maine
In the vast gulf that arcs from Massachusetts’s shores to Canada’s Bay of Fundy, cod was once king.,,“A fisherman’s job isn’t to get an unbiased estimate of abundance. It’s to catch fish,” said Michael Fogarty, the chief of the ecosystem assessment program at the Northeast Fisheries Science Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the federal agency that monitors sea life. “The world they see is a different world than we see in the surveys.”. Louisiana Fishermen happy for reopening of waters affected by oil spill
For coastal fisherman, the wait has been long and much anticipated. “It’s a very big deal,” said Dean Blanchard, owner of Dean Blanchard Seafood in Grand Isle. “That’s been one of our primary fishing grounds for the last 50 years.” When Blanchard’s vessel captains heard of the news, they immediately made arrangements to get out to their old, reliable fishing area to test the waters. Feds offer more details on illegal lobster sales – possible investigation into tax evasion by lobstermen
