Island Fishermen’s Wives keep safety in focus – 25 years of community service

IA-IFWA-25-years-121814-FD_storyleadTwenty-five years ago the island fishing community lost two of its own within a few short weeks. Clyde Haskell and Allen Thompson both died in fishing-related incidents. Thompson’s body was never recovered from the water. From those tragedies was born an association that would bring the safety and well-being of fishermen into the light: Island Fishermen’s Wives Association, or IFWA for short. Permit buyback at Bristol Bay: Good idea, but how/who to pay for it …

Labor Advocate Lisa Maya Knauer: Seafood workers fired after wage protest

On a blistering cold Monday night, some 25 workers and “allies” gathered at Northern Pelagic Group’s Fish Island facility with candles in hand, waving placards and chanting slogans in Spanish and English.”This is based on a history of complaints that the workers have had with the company about working conditions,” said Lisa Maya Knauer, (pictured) an activist with Centro Comunitario Trabajadores and UMass Dartmouth professor. Knauer said 15 of the workers agreed to participate in the stoppage. Fisheries-Related Funds Included in Federal Spending Bill – $72 million in expanded stock assessments

When the federal spending bill passed on Monday, there were several provisions in it for fisheries-related projects. This year’s bill includes $72 million in expanded stock assessments and $24 million for survey and monitoring projects within the Fisheries Research and Management Account. ‘Ministers strike a balance to protect livelihoods’ – December Council outcomes

Despite pressure from environmental lobby groups, ministers took advantage of the flexibilities provided for them them by the to reduce proposed cuts on a number of major commercial species. Celtic Sea Haddock’s cut was reduced from 41% to 12%, while the cut of Celtic Sea cod was reduced from a proposed 64% to 26%. Eastern Channel sole still faced a cut of 28%, mitigated from -60%. New Jersey: Coast Guard issues report on off-shore gas port

A new report by the U.S. Coast Guard concludes that a proposed liquefied natural gas port off the New Jersey coast would have minimal impact to the air, water, marine life and sediment on the ocean floor around the site. The proposal by Liberty Natural Gas would include a port at sea to extract liquefied natural gas from specially designed ships that convert it back into a gas form so it could be pumped to shore on Long Island. Fithian contests DNR statement on rockfish quota

“There’s no science behind it,” Fithian said of the reduction. “There are more fish of any size in the Chesapeake Bay than there have ever been in my lifetime.” Recent reductions in the crab harvest may be a direct reflection of this abundance, Fithian said. Rockfish are voracious predators, he said. In New Jersey, fishermen have already adapted to the realities of the shift, said Greg DiDomenico, the executive director of the Garden State Seafood Association. “The industry has been adapting to this for the last 20 years.
