Abandoned 90-foot fishing boat finally has an owner

Abandoned 90-foot fishing boat finally has an ownerThe two-year quest to determine the owner of the Columbia came to an end when Doug Wood, of Bremen, presented the bill of sale to the Bristol Harbor Committee Dec. 10. Wood informed the harbor committee he had received the bill of sale from the 90-foot fishing vessel’s last documented owner, Alan Curtis, of New Bedford, Mass. “Lo and behold, I am now the official owner of the Columbia,” Wood said. Cod and costs: Lawsuit says groundfishing industry will collapse under cost of new federal mandate

TJI_groundfishing-cod_121715-450x166Maine fishermen would be among those hardest hit by a new federal mandate that requires groundfishing boat captains to pay for at-sea monitors, critics say. The at-sea monitors are federally mandated enforcement contractors who can cost upwards of $700 a day, according to litigants in a new lawsuit against the federal government. In Maine, Portland is a major port for ground fishermen, but more remote places such as Cundy’s Harbor out of Harpswell would be affected as well, said New Hampshire fisherman David Goethel, plaintiff in the new case against the U.S. Department of Commerce. Shrimp prices down amid flurry of imports, reports of foreign abuse

AR-151219426.jpg&MaxW=650It was quiet as sunburnt deckhands scrubbed trawlers moored at the shrimp house on Wheelers Creek this week. The last three months of shrimping have been busy, busier than expected, Mitchell Seafood manager Randy Millis said on Tuesday afternoon. Despite fall’s robust harvest, shrimp prices are below ideal levels, Millis added. He attributes low prices to foreign pond- and farm-grown shrimp filling the U.S. seafood market. “This year has been a good year; it has been a good fall,” Millis said. “(But) this year, import shrimp is pushing prices down.” Read the article here 16:27

Vincenzo’s Recipe for Lobster ravioli with champagne cream sauce

For the dough: In a bowl, sift together the flour and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together six eggs, oil and two tablespoons of water. Pour the flour mixture onto a clean, dry work surface. Form the mixture into a well. Pour half of the egg mixture into the well. Using a fork, begin to incorporate the flour into the egg mixture. Once absorbed, incorporate the remaining egg mixture. Knead by hand five to six minutes, until all of the liquid is absorbed, flouring the work surface as needed to make sure the dough doesn’t stick. Roll the dough into a ball. Cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate one hour. For the lobster stuffing: Read the recipe here!   More about Vincenzo’s Click here 10:40

NPFMC tightens Southcentral charter halibut allocation for 2016

Blue NPFMC SidebarThe level of legally harvestable halibut in the North Pacific has dropped for a decade, and though biologists think the biomass has stabilized, downsized fishermen continue to fight for as much valuable quota as possible. Charter guides who’ve seen their portion drop want a way to buy quota from commercial operators. The commercial fleet sees the plan as an unfair grab. They already share fish with charter guides under a catch sharing plan and there is a program for charter operators to lease, but not purchase, commercial quota. Read the article here 10:16

US: Chinese Island Building Threatens Shipping, Fishing

China’s aggressive island building in the South China Sea has drawn international attention to Beijing’s expansive maritime territorial claims. This week it also drew a caution from the head of the United States Pacific Fleet, Admiral Scott Swift. In a speech at a Cooperative Strategy Forum in Hawaii Monday, Admiral Swift did not name China as the country responsible for the situation. But he said the way claims have been enforced has intimidated fishermen who “trawled the seas freely for generations” and are now facing threats to their livelihoods. Read the article here 08:59
