‘No smoke in the smokehouse’ on the Magdalen Islands after herring ban

The smell of smoked herring is a familiar scent along the shores of the island of Havre aux Maisons, part of the Magdalen Islands, where the Fumoir d’antan has been smoking the fish since 1942, but the tradition won’t be able to continue this summer. Commercial Fisherman Peter Buompensiero of San Diego has passed away

Peter Buompensiero passed away peacefully in Las Vegas, Nevada, on December 2nd, 2021. Peter was one of three children and the oldest son of John Buompensiero and Nina Venezia Buompensiero. Peter grew up in San Diego’s Little Italy. He loved to go down to his dad’s small fishing boat, the F/V Rosalia Madre and developed a love for the sea. He spent many years as a cook in the United States tuna fleet. He worked with Champ Brenha on the F/V Viking, with Frank Souza on the bait boat F/V Mary S, with George Souza on the seiners F/V Lusitania and F/V Mary S, and with Joe Finete on the M/V Jeanette Diana. In his later years, Pete worked with his long-time shipmate and cousin Joe Anfuso on the F/V Acoustic Explorer before retiring and relocating to Las Vegas. >click to read< 12:55

4 arrested for stone crab fishing violations

“When the vessel crew of the ‘Nauti Crab’ noticed our patrol vessel headed toward them, the crew dropped all of the stone crab gear to the bottom,” Lt. Scott Smith said. “The captain stated they had broken down and just fixed their vessel. They insisted they had not been crabbing in that area.” “They were using a long line gear setup, with 60 to 80 traps all connected on one line underwater and invisible to the eye,” Smith said. “Each line should be marked by a buoy; however, not a single line we located was marked.” Officers documented the evidence and followed the Nauti Crab vessel back to its home port of Hernando Beach where authorities seized the boat’s GPS units along with drugs and paraphernalia for evidence. >click to read< 11:55

But first, let’s begin with a close-up view in Brownsville, Texas. Here at the Port of Brownsville, it’s fairly quiet, except for the shorebirds. Most shrimp boats are stuck in port. Charles Burnell and his son Kyle run the Shrimp Outlet on Brownsville’s coastal edge. Earlier this week, one of their boats returned with $100,000 worth of shrimp, a slightly above average catch.
