Texas: New shrimp season tangled up in regulations

That plate of fried shrimp people enjoy at a restaurant –whether locally or away from home – could either be taken off the menus or cost a lot more. The tastier Gulf shrimp caught by trawlers off the Texas Gulf Coast from the Brownsville/Port Isabel to the Palacios areas could also be replaced by farmed-raised crustaceans. That’s because this South Texas industry – one of the nation’s largest – is caught in the middle of a crisis caused by today’s U.S. immigration policies and by what is going on in countries south of Mexico. The expected arrival of hundreds of people who traditionally work on the boats, known as shrimp headers, is on halt right now; yet the kickoff of the 2022 season is about two weeks away. >click to read< 17:53

Gulf Shrimpers seek shelter from approaching storm

At the Brownsville Shrimp Basin Thursday morning, workers at the Zimco Marine unloading dock raced against the clock to unload frozen shrimp from trawlers and load it onto trucks. “We have to get it done quick before the rains start and the winds start,” Supervisor Leonard Leyva said. “It’s already getting pretty dark so we’re trying to get things done quick.”,,,Next door at Texas Shrimp Association headquarters, TSA Executive Director Andrea Hance said most of the Brownsville shrimp fleet was either back in port or on its way. Earlier in the week, amid forecasts that Harvey would reorganize as it bore down on the coast, captains began steaming homeward, she said. Hance owns two shrimp boats with her husband, Preston, who called in to report that the Brownsville Ship Channel was packed with incoming trawlers. click here to read the story 09:19

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
