Bumble Bee Foods to File Bankruptcy, Sell Assets to Taiwanese Firm

Bumble Bee Foods announced Thursday it will file for bankruptcy and sell its assets to a Taiwanese company for $925 million. The bankruptcy sale comes in the aftermath of criminal fines and civil lawsuits against the San Diego company in the wake of a federal price-fixing case. “It’s been a challenging time for our company but today’s actions allow us to move forward with minimal disruption to our day-to-day operations,” said Jan Tharp, president and chief executive officer. >click to read< 16:53

Bumble Bee Foods agrees to $6M settlement in worker oven death

Bumble Bee Foods agreed to pay $6 million to settle criminal charges Wednesday in the death of a worker who was cooked in an oven with tons of tuna. Bumble Bee Foods, 2 others charged after employee died in pressure cooker

On Oct. 11, 2012, Jose Melena, 62, entered a 35-foot oven at the company’s Santa Fe Springs plant to make a repair inside the machine, which is used to sterilize thousands of cans of tuna at a time. Unaware that Melena was inside the oven, other plant workers loaded several carts that altogether held about 12,000 pounds of tuna, shut the door and turned on the oven, prosecutors said. Thai Union set to acquire Bumble Bee for $1.5bn

Thai Union Frozen Products has entered into a binding agreement to acquire 100% of the shares of North America’s largest branded shelf-stable seafood company – Bumble Bee Foods. The $1.51 billion purchase is set to marry two of the most recognized seafood brands in the United States — San Diego-based Bumble Bee and Thai Union-owned Chicken of the Sea. Read the rest here 15:06
