Fin whale entangled in a navigation buoy near Grand Manan last week is presumed dead

A fin whale spotted near Grand Manan is believed to have died after becoming entangled in a navigation buoy, something rescuers say they have never seen before. Campobello Whale Rescue Team with the Canadian Whale Institute, said the rescue team responded to a report of an entangled whale spotted from the Grand Manan Ferry at around 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 1. The ferry was travelling from Blacks Harbour to Grand Manan. New Brunswick: Previously entangled right whale spotted free of gear

A North Atlantic right whale that was seen entangled in fishing gear in late June has now been spotted swimming free of any gear, according to Fisheries and Oceans Canada. The whale was partially disentangled on July 16 by the Campobello Whale Rescue Team,,, The whale was swimming off the coast of Miscou Island on New Brunswick’s northeastern shore, according to a tweet from the department posted on Friday. >click to read< 10:29

Fishermen volunteer to become 2nd right whale rescue team

Ferron is one of three crab fishermen who volunteered to form a new rescue team based in Shippagan. He, Martin Noël and Rémi Guignard have been training since last winter. The objective is to eventually have a boat to respond quickly to disentanglement calls in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.,,, Jean Lanteigne, director of the Regional Acadian Federation of Professional Fishermen, said the Campobello Whale Rescue team first approached the fishermen to see if anyone was interested in volunteering. ‘A big fish in this small beautiful pond’: Campobello remembers fallen whale rescuer

A crowd of about 400 gathered for the funeral of a New Brunswick man who died rescuing a whale on Monday. Joe Howlett, 59, was freeing a whale from snow crab fishing lines when he died near Shippagan. The funeral was held at the Wilson’s Beach Baptist Church in Wison’s Beach, Campobello. While the church usually holds 150 people, they made room for 400. Howlett’s son Tyler is one of the many who shared memories of his father. “He was just the funniest guy. He had a joke for everything.
