New Brunswick fish-packing plant fire could affect P.E.I. fishery

Officials in the Island fishing industry are monitoring the fallout from a fire that destroyed a fish-packing plant in Cap-Pelé, N.B. The impacts will definitely be felt more so in New Brunswick, officials with the P.E.I. Department of Agriculture and Fisheries said. “We have a small number of lobster buyers who sell their lobsters purchased in P.E.I. to this processor.,,, The Cape Bald Packers fish-packing plant in Cap-Pelé was destroyed by fire this past Sunday. Cape Bald Packers fish plant ‘total loss,’ says Cap-Pelé fire chief

The Cape Bald Packers fish-packing plant in Cap-Pelé, N.B., is a “total loss,” the village’s fire chief said. “Everything is gone,” said Ronald Cormier. “We couldn’t control the fire. There was too [much] flame and too [much] black smoke.” Cormier said the call about the fire came in around 10:30 a.m. “It’s a vicious fire,” said Cap-Pelé Mayor Serge Léger, who was at the site.,,, Léger said he was in shock and too upset to continue speaking. “We could lose up to 500 jobs here. “It’s the biggest employer in Cap-Pelé. It’s a very sad moment. I hope the community will come together and they’ll rebuild.” >click to read<14:36

The New England groundfish debacle (Part III): who or what is at fault? Nils E. Stolpe/FishNet

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
