Owner, captains of crab fishing vessels charged with illegally transporting crab from Alaska

A federal grand jury in Alaska returned an indictment charging the owner and captains of two crab catcher vessels with illegally transporting crab from Alaska, in violation of the Lacey Act. According to court documents, Corey Potter is the owner of the two crab catching vessels, and Corey Potter and Kyle Potter are the captains of the vessels. In February and March 2024, the vessels harvested over 7,000 pounds of Tanner and golden king crab in Southeast Alaska. Corey Potter allegedly directed Kyle Potter and Justin Welch to take the crab to Seattle, Washington, where they intended to sell it at a higher price than they would have in Alaska. more, >>CLICK TO READ<< 06:14

RNLI man is charged over death of fisherman in rescue after the grandfather’s boat was capsized during a rescue

A RNLI volunteer has been charged over the death of a grandfather whose fishing boat capsized during a rescue operation. William Murray McCubbin, 60, was pulled from the water after his vessel sank close to Port William harbour, Wigtownshire, in November 2022. His boat had become stranded on the rocks and efforts were already being made to recover it when it capsized. Mr McCubbin was taken to the Galloway Community Hospital, in Stranraer, but he could not be saved. Police have now arrested and charged a 48-year-old volunteer lifeboat crew member following a 16-month investigation. Moss Landing Fisherman arrested in weapons and narcotics bust

Monterey County Sheriff’s Deputies seized 11 guns, cocaine, methamphetamine and $100,000 in cash in a Central Coast bust involving a Moss Landing Fisherman. The Sheriff’s Office alongside the Drug Enforcement Agency had been investigating 47-year-old fisherman Gerald Welte Jr. when he was found at a Seaside motel Friday. Welte was found at the hotel with 39-year-old Latisha Radar of Seaside and 48-year-old Anthony Ramirez of Sylmar. All three were arrested. >click to read< 08:15

Vessel owner ordered to pay €170k ($206,193) to release trawler

Today skipper of the Punta Candieira, Vicente Meitin Sanjuan, appeared before Midleton District Court. State solicitor John Brosnan said charges were being brought under Sections 8 and 10 of the Sea Fisheries and Maritime Jurisdiction Act, 2006. The charges include unlawful fishing and being on board a vessel, which had unlawfully entered the waters of the State. He said a bond of €200,000 should be paid by the owners to release the vessel as there was valuable gear and a significant catch of hake on board. >click to read< 15:35

RCMP: Two charged following alleged incidents in St. Mary’s Bay during fisheries dispute

The charges were laid under the Vessel Operation Restriction Regulations for unsafe activity in St. Mary’s Bay near Saulnierville. On Nov. 26, the RCMP charged 34-year-old Brandon Alexander Maloney, of Hants County, for unsafe operation of a vessel in relation to an incident that took place Sept. 20 in St. Mary’s Bay. Maloney was a fisheries manager for Sipekne’katik at the time of the alleged incident. He has since been elected to council and no longer holds that manager position. Also charged is 26-year-old Shaquest India Miller of Yarmouth County, for unsafe operation of a vessel, relating to an Oct. 12 incident, in St. Mary’s Bay. Both are scheduled to appear in Digby Provincial Court on Feb. 15.  >click to read< 17:23

Sitka man in an “aggravated and confrontational state”, charged with ‘terroristic threatening’ in harbor disturbance

Sitka police received a 9-1-1 call at about 8:15 P.M. that an intoxicated man was on a vessel, brandishing a knife and making threatening statements toward his fellow crew members and passersby. He may also have had a gun. On arrival, officers say they found Nicholas Bryant in an “aggravated and confrontational state.” >click to read< 10:32    Crewmember Arrested After Armed Confrontation in Sitka Harbor Bryant refused to exit the vessel or to follow the officers’ instructions, but after they put a single round of pepper gas on deck, he came out and surrendered without further incident, the department reported. Mexican national charged with murder, attempted murder in deadly hammer, knife attack on fishing boat off Nantucket

A Mexican national is facing charges after a fisherman on a Virginia-based fishing vessel died during an altercation about 55 miles off the coast of Nantucket over the weekend, officials said. A Boston-based spokesman says the Coast Guard received a call Sunday afternoon from the 83-foot Captain Billy Haver, reporting that a member of the crew had attacked several other fishermen with a hammer and a knife. The Coast Guard placed a law enforcement team on board the vessel and arrested Franklin Freddy Meave Vazquez, 27, on several charges, including one count of murder and one count of attempted murder. >click to read<19:00

Oregon boat captain accused of drunken assault on woman at sea

An Oregon man accused of assaulting a woman on a commercial fishing ship he was operating while intoxicated was arrested after a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter located the vessel and sent a response boat to board the ship, according to federal court documents. Branden Michael Vanderploeg of Winchester Bay is charged with assault within maritime jurisdiction and operating a commercial vessel under the influence of alcohol. Vanderploeg, 38, is accused of holding the woman down, punching her repeatedly in the face, slamming her head into a tool box and swinging a fishing gaff at her – a pole with a sharp hook at the end used to stab large fish, >click to read<18:43

‘Wicked Tuna’ Star Captain Delivers Beatdown … Gets Arrested

0421-tyler-mclaughlin-mug-shot-4One of the captains from “Wicked Tuna” got busted in port for smashing a guy’s face. Captain Tyler McLaughlin was charged this week for misdemeanor assault … according to the Perquimans County Sheriff’s Dept. in North Carolina.  Cops say McLaughlin got into it with another fisherman last month near the docks. The Nat Geo star allegedly put the guy in a choke hold and punched him in the eye multiple times. We’re told the victim suffered a broken nose and 2 black eyes. McLaughlin bounced before cops arrived. Weeks later, McLaughlin turned himself in to cops, got booked but was immediately released on a $10,000 bond. Former Board of Fisheries nominee charged with Permanent Fund fraud

A former head of the United Cook Inlet Drift Association and Alaska Board of  nominee is being charged with illegally collecting $7,422 in Alaska Permanent Fund dividends between 2009 and 2014. Roland Maw, who owns a home in Kasilof, was charged Wednesday in Juneau District Court with 17 counts of theft and unsworn falsification on his applications for six years of Permanent Fund dividends and for commercial fishing permits.
