Following a boat fire in Port Hardy, fire crews are putting out a reminder to always have a working fire extinguisher onboard your boat. Bend couple puts out commercial fishing boat fire

When she saw the smoke rising off a boat docked at the Port of Alsea, Amanda Wold made joke about someone “hiding out there smoking a big joint,” she said. “It started out slow, then it started to billow, and then it flamed.” A battery on a commercial crabbing boat was on fire. Amanda and her husband, Justin Wold, of Bend, sprang into action, calling 911 and searching for a fire extinguisher. While the owner of the fire extinguisher hasn’t come forward, the owner of the burning boat, Pat Kemmish, was grateful for the Wolds’ quick response. “It’s my livelihood,” Kemmish said of the boat. >click to read< 16:51

Police investigating fire of Membertou commercial fishing boat

Cape Breton Regional Police are investigating a fire that caused serious damage to the Membertou II commercial fishing boat early Saturday morning.
Kelsea MacNeil (spokesperson for Membertou Development Corporation), Hubert Nicholas (director of fisheries for Membertou) and Captain John Bonham Paul all confirm police are investigating the blaze. The boat was docked at the Dobson Yatch club when it caught on fire. Around 3:30 a.m. Membertou Chief and Council, Membertou Fisheries Division and Paul were notified of the blaze. >click to read< 16:54

Overnight commercial fishing boat fire in Point Beach

l_12828466_1170242852993553_5193544034253494341_o A fire broke out overnight in a Point Pleasant Beach commercial fishing boat that recently drifted into a railroad bridge, authorities say. Police, fire, and emergency medical services were dispatched to the fishing docks near the intersection of Baltimore Avenue and Channel Drive shortly after 3:30 a.m. today, according to Jerry Meaney, a local first responder who posted a video of the scene on his Barnegat Bay Island, NJ Facebook page. Responding units discovered heavy smoke with flames showing from the fishing vessel “Ocean One,” Meaney said. Link 10:25

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
