Mayday – Mayday – Mayday: Tuna boat throws curveballs to new owners
The last thing any fisherman ever wants to do is place a mayday call because their boat is sinking, but for Capt. Adam Hall and the F/V Tommy John, that’s exactly what happened late in the night on Saturday, July 25, about a 20-hour voyage off the south Washington coast. Hall and boat co-owner Greg Surgener of Southern California-based Surgener Fisheries sank big dollars into purchasing the Tommy John, moored at the time in San Diego. The duo wanted to find a boat to tuna and crab fish and felt the 50-footer was the right fit for their needs. An unusual-looking route bought the Coralynne to the attention of authorities and, as investigators boarded the fishing vessel, it didn’t take long to confirm their suspicions — it was allegedly carrying more than a tonne of what presumptive testing suggests is cocaine. As police boarded the boat, a fire broke out in the engine room. It was extinguished before officers found what they allege was more than a tonne of drugs that were sitting inside the boat. Fishing Boat Catches Great White Shark while dragging off Barnegat Inlet
Commercial fishermen never really know what they’re going to find when they pull up their nets, but Ocean County fisherman Timothy Brindley never expected what he found. Brindley and his crew of the Viking Rose were trawling out in the Atlantic Ocean just 2 1/2 miles off the coast of Barnegat Light when he saw a Great White Shark in his net as it was pulled out of the ocean.,, He works out of the Viking Village Commercial Fishing Dock on Long Beach Island which is home to over 40 commercial fishing boats. >photos, click to read< 07:32
Foreshadowing of a fire
A funny thing happened last month, at the June 15 meeting of the Apalachicola Volunteer Fire Department. The firefighters were talking about whether the department could use a fire boat, and Chief George Watkins told the story of how 46 years ago when he was still in high school, the 72-foot Kingfisher burned in the Apalachicola River. On Tuesday, June 16, Watkins and Jimmy Moses were working on Little St. George Island when they got a page, “We didn’t see any smoke, but about the time we got almost to the bridge it blew up and we saw black smoke,” Watkins said. “We knew it was bad.” The 45-foot Desperado, captained by Michael Redman, was in in the process of coming up Scipio Creek from Port St. Joe when the mishap occurred. >click to read< 07:53

F/V Jamie Lynn sinking near the mouth of Shem Creek
The Jamie Lynn shrimp boat is currently sinking, positioned southeast of the entrance of Shem Creek in front of the bank of the Old Village. On Wednesday, June 24 residents of the Old Village contacted the Moultrie News about the boat sinking near residential docks. Mount Pleasant Police Department confirmed the U.S. Coast Guard is in charge of the investigation. Biloxi, Mississippi: The 91st annual Blessing of the Fleet is happening Sunday!
After being pushed back a week due to bad weather, the 91st Blessing of the Shrimp Fleet takes place Sunday. The 91st Blessing of the Fleet is set to start at 2 p.m. in the Biloxi Channel when they drop the Memorial Wreath to honor deceased fishermen. Boats will form in the west end of the Biloxi Channel near the Beau Rivage and the parade will float east. Boat sustains heavy damage as it burns along Fishermen’s Terminal
A large boat at Seattle’s Fishermen’s Terminal suffered severe damage during a large fire on board Sunday evening. Capsized commercial fishing boat off Bodega Bay coast identified as Fort Bragg-based Miss Hailey
Coast Guard resources are still engaged in a search for one man after rescuing three other people Saturday night, but that search may soon be paused due to weather conditions, Coast Guard Sector San Francisco Lt. Jg. Chris Greenwood said in a phone interview Sunday morning. “Typically off Bodega Bay, weather is extremely rough out there,” Greenwood said. “It limits how long we can stay on scene.”,,, Greenwood said officials don’t know if the man lost at sea was wearing a wet suit or a dry suit, saying only that he was wearing a life jacket. >click to read< 15:25
Police investigating fire of Membertou commercial fishing boat
Cape Breton Regional Police are investigating a fire that caused serious damage to the Membertou II commercial fishing boat early Saturday morning.
Kelsea MacNeil (spokesperson for Membertou Development Corporation), Hubert Nicholas (director of fisheries for Membertou) and Captain John Bonham Paul all confirm police are investigating the blaze. The boat was docked at the Dobson Yatch club when it caught on fire. Fishing boat catches fire near Bandon, 4 aboard unhurt
No one was hurt when a commercial fishing boat caught fire Thursday while off the coast near Bandon, the U.S. Coast Guard said. Fisherman drowns in Cook Inlet; body brought to Homer Harbor
A Kenai man died at sea Thursday after falling overboard from a commercial fishing boat this morning north of Kodiak. Alaska State Troopers identified the victim as Anthony Walsh, 62. The U.S. Coast Guard and Alaska State Troopers received a report at about 9 a.m. that a man went into the water off a fishing vessel about 124 nautical miles or 143 miles north of Kodiak in Cook Inlet. According to an Alaska State Troopers dispatch, Walsh fell overboard while salmon fishing with Kevin Loran, 59, of Anchorage. Loran attempted to get Walsh on board, but was not successful.

Sinking fishing boat salvaged at Ventura Harbor
Crews salvaged a commercial fishing boat that was sinking at Ventura Harbor early Saturday. The Ventura Harbor Patrol was notified at 2:10 a.m. about a boat that had started sinking in its slip at the Ventura Harbor Village Marina, 1583 Spinnaker Drive. Patrol officers responded and requested assistance from the city of Ventura Fire Department, the Coast Guard and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. An oil containment boom was deployed around the vessel to minimize the spread of its 1,300 gallons of diesel fuel. >click to read<19:46
Investigation continues after death on commercial fishing boat
An official with the U.S. Coast Guard said a boat currently docked in Beaufort returned with a crew member who had died. According to several posts on Facebook, family and friends identified the fisherman as Wesley Vanhook of Bayboro. The Coast Guard said they got a call around 9:15 Sunday that one of the crew members aboard the Little Jesse had received a head injury. Sitka Police – Suspect identified in Eliason Harbor fishing boat shooting, held on $100,000 bail
Sitka Police Department have released more information about the suspect of a shooting Saturday evening that left one man injured. 35-year-old Nathan Leask has been identified as the suspect who allegedly shot a man on a commercial fishing boat before fleeing. Sitka Police say they received a call around 5:30 p.m. that a man had been shot on a commercial fishing boat in Eliason Harbor. “Upon arrival, officers located an adult male with a gunshot would on his thigh and blunt force trauma to the head,” said the press release from Sitka Police. “Leask had entered the vessel occupied by the victim and female and a physical altercation had broken out.” Leask was apparently armed with a handgun during the fight. Is the fishing boat stuck on the rocks near Cayucos going to stay there forever?
A Morro Bay commercial fishing boat has been stuck on coastal rocks off the northern coast of Cayucos for more than two months, mired in a jurisdictional limbo as officials from state, federal and county agencies figure out how to remove it — and who’s going pay for it. It may stay there a while. BREAKING: Dead man found on commercial fishing boat in Portsmouth
State Police report an untimely death aboard a commercial fishing boat tied to the dock at the Portsmouth Fish Co-Op on Peirce Island. On Saturday, August 12, around 11 a.m., N.H. State Police Marine Patrol received a report of a deceased male identified as Seth M. Caron, age 29, of Brunswick, Maine. The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation. Commercial Fishing Boat Runs Aground Near China Camp In Marin County
Two boaters in distress were able to safely walk to shore after a 30-foot commercial vessel lost power in the North Bay and ran aground Saturday at China Camp State Park near San Rafael, according to United States Coast Guard officials. The Coast Guard got a phone call from a commercial fishing vessel that had run aground at China Camp around 8:34 a.m. They dispatched a 45-foot surf rescue boat and a helicopter, according to Lt. Commercial fishing boat runs aground in Oregon Inlet
A commercial fishing trawler from Wanchese ran aground Monday morning just east of the Bonner Bridge in Oregon Inlet. I am a commercial fisherman, and to be honest, it raises my blood pressure and turns my stomach that Greenport claims the fame as a fishing port. Unfortunately, it seems the village is more interested in being called a fishing village than actually being one. The fact of the matter is, village government has never made it easy for a commercial fishing boat to actually work out of the village. They have a commercial dock but don’t allow fish boxes there. The morning after on the Evening Star is marked with heaps of blood-tinged ice and buckets of bright dead fish. Crew members use plastic shovels and gloved hands to dig the fish out of the holds and scoop the ice into melting pink piles on the deck of the 50-foot commercial fishing boat.
