Troubled waters, heartfelt stories in ‘Sacred Cod’ – Tonight on the Discovery Channel

Of the two sacred emblems of Massachusetts — the bean and the cod — the cod gets all the glory but the bean is certainly more environmentally secure. For centuries fishermen from Gloucester have relied on cod — and the world has relied on them to provide it — but recently scientists have determined that the fish stocks are being depleted at an unsustainable rate and soon there will be no more cod to fish. The fishermen protest that because of the regulations imposed on them, soon there will be no fishermen left to do the fishing. “Sacred Cod,” premiering Thursday at 9 p.m. on Discovery, gives time to both sides. They offer warm, robust, and sympathetic portraits of these Gloucestermen with their powerful work ethic, fierce love of family, and faith in the American Dream. And they also thoughtfully and thoroughly present the point of view of the bureaucrats and scientists who are trying to do what’s best with the information they have. click here to read the story 20:12

‘Deadliest Catch’ Season 13: Captains Bill Wichrowski and Keith Colburn’s life more appealing than Josh Harris?

3481703449_60cb6b6e9b_b-1Discovery Channel’s “Deadliest Catch” season 13 is already up for production and already a captain is not coming back. Rumors are swirling that the lives of Captains Wild Bill Wichrowski and Keith Colburn are more appealing than that of Josh Harris. “This a critical year, because a lot of those boats are up for contracts because they thought the show was only to run for 10 years, myself included,” Wichrowski said. “This is my contract year. I’m seriously trying to get Zack into the wheelhouse and that’s going to take a little time. So we’ll see what happens. Aside from Captain Wichrowski, another Captain is also adjusting to his life these days after his divorce. In Season 12, Captain Keith Colburn of F/V Wizard parted ways with his wife of 25 years and the coming season will test his stability in the wheelhouse. Read the story here 14:20

Hurting US Shark Fishermen: Enviro and recreational groups lobby Congress to pass the Shark Fin Trade Elimination Act of 2016

A collective composed of 80 nonprofit and conservation organizations penned and postmarked a letter to the United States Congress, asking that legislators pass the Shark Fin Trade Elimination Act of 2016, in effect banning the trade of shark fins in the United States. The Shark Fin Trade Elimination Act of 2016 is supported by more than 200 businesses, non-profits, associations and scientific organizations and would help save species of sharks from going extinct. Specific supporters include the American Sportfishing Association, the Recreational Fishing Alliance, the Billfish Foundation, Guy Harvey Foundation, the International Game Fish Association, Discovery Channel, Landry’s Inc, Lokai, Sea World and many others. NGO Oceana, who also supports the ban, said it conducted a poll that found eight in 10 Americans said they supported a national ban on the purchase and sale of shark fins. (I’d like to see that poll!) Read this. Click here 16:48

‘Cold Water Cowboys’ – Fishing captains and crews the stars of the show Tuesday night on Discovery

Working a 50-foot fishing boat in swelling seas and roaring winds a couple of hundred kilometres off the coast of Newfoundland takes guts, hard work and good communication among the crew.  So when Capt. Paul Tiller of Valleyfield, Bonavista Bay, told his crew last season he was taking a TV team on board to film their pursuit of crab, shrimp and turbot — to follow their every movement and record their interactions — they thought their captain had finally logged one too many weather-beaten voyages. “They told me I was cracked,” Tiller said, laughing.
