Louisiana elected officials seek to protect local fishermen from imported shrimp

Louisiana elected officials are rallying to find solutions to help protect the state’s shrimp fishermen from cheap foreign shrimp that critics say is depriving shrimpers of their livelihood and undermining public health. Last month, the state Legislature’s Seafood Safety Task Force met to consider ways to stem the influx of shrimp from China and other nations amid concerns that the imported seafood may contain impurities that pose risks to the health of Louisianans. In addition, Gov. John Bel Edwards has requested that the U.S. secretary of commerce declare an emergency disaster declaration to provide assistance to shrimp fishermen. The Florida-based Southern Shrimp Alliance is also urging governors of Gulf and southeastern states to request federal relief funds for shrimpers. >>click to read<< 07:29

Strong Amicus Support in Fishermen Case Challenging Chevron Deference

New Jersey herring fishermen challenging an unlawful federal regulation at the Supreme Court next fall got a boost yesterday in the form of amicus briefs supporting their case—Loper Bright Enterprises, Inc. v. Raimondo. The briefs were filed by fellow fishermen, professors, small business, industry, legal advocacy groups, public policy groups, and elected officials. A total of 44 briefs were filed by 171 amici, including 18 U.S. senators, 18 U.S. representatives, 27 state attorneys general, and Georgia Governor Brian Kemp. The fishermen are challenging a federal regulation that forces them to pay the salaries of government-mandated at-sea monitors who observe their operations and report to the government. The fishermen argue Congress never granted the executive branch the authority to force them to pay for monitors. >click to read< 16:05

Letter to the Editor: The big-money green-lie

Dear Editor: It’s the big-money green-lie. Maine lobstermen are not killing whales. Progressive, woke Democrats climate change scams are killing the heart and soul of Maine. No evidence. Zero whales have been killed in this century by lobster gear entanglements. Solar and wind equal a financial bonanza for politicians, long-standing innocuous traditions are standing (fishing) in their way. No leadership. Elected officials sworn-in to represent and protect are cashing-in on special interest, new-green deal-threats that do not exist. >click to read< By Dave Gregg

Elected Officials Hear Concerns From Watermen

Elected officials assured commercial watermen they heard their concerns at a meeting last week. On Oct. 16, Congressman Andy Harris joined Sen. Mary Beth Carozza and Delegate Wayne Hartman to meet with commercial fishermen at the West Ocean City Commercial Harbor. Harris offered support as they pursue changes to ensure local watermen can continue to earn a living. “You just tell us when and to whom we have to make the case,” Harris said. Harris joined Carozza and Hartman at Sea Born Seafood last Friday to talk about issues facing local fishermen. Sonny Gwin, who operates the Skilligallee, stressed the importance of maintaining local boats’ ability to fish for black sea bass. Watermen also asked Harris to work toward increasing limits on red crabs. >click to read< 12:20

Our water quality problems are a tangled mess, but they can be fixed

What can we or local governments do about red tide? Another major outbreak could be disaster. But it could be necessary to forces us to address the sources of nutrient pollution. Reality is government ignores everything it can. To fix things, the sources have to be outed, and then it will take money to clean things up. But elected officials need contributions to get elected and re-elected. It’s expensive to campaign. What do those big contributions buy? >click to read< 09:04
