U.S. Coast Guard rescues seven in two missions off the Georgia coast – Video

The Coast Guard rescued seven people in two separate search and rescue cases Tuesday off the Georgia coast. In the first rescue, three people were hoisted from a life raft about 60 miles east of Tybee Island,,, In the second rescue, a separate Air Station Savannah Dolphin aircrew hoisted four survivors at 5:18 a.m. after the fishing vessel, Jimmy & Charlie, began taking on water near Egg Island. >Video, click to read< 15:13

Coast Guard suspends search for fisherman 21 miles east of Myrtle Beach

The Coast Guard suspended their search Saturday at sunset for Howard “Dale” Smith missing 21 miles east of Myrtle Beach since late Friday evening. Coast Guard Sector Charleston Command Center watchstanders received a call at 9:29 p.m. Friday, from the crew of the Addis Sylvester, a 42-foot fishing vessel out of Little River, S.C., stating a crewmember had fallen overboard. Search crews completed 20 searches covering approximately 3,052 square miles. click here to read bulletin 23:47

Friday night, 42-year-old Howard “Dale” Smith, reportedly fell overboard on a fishing vessel about 21 miles East of Myrtle Beach, according to the Coast Guard. Today, his loved ones are looking for answers and looking for him. The Coast Guard is continuing their search in the water and air for the missing man. The New England groundfish debacle (Part III): who or what is at fault? Nils E. Stolpe/FishNet

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
