Coast Guard suspends search for commercial fisherman who went overboard off Montauk

The Coast Guard suspended the search Sunday afternoon for a missing fisherman who went overboard 16 nautical miles south of Montauk Point, New York, Saturday. Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound watchstanders received the initial radio distress call via VHF Channel 16 at 11:20 p.m. from the commercial fishing vessel F/V Hope and Sydney, reporting that crew member Carl Whitney, 32, had gone overboard. The individual was reported wearing an orange t-shirt, jeans and carrying a green duffle bag. He was not wearing a personal floatation device. >click to read< 16:46

Coast Guard Cutter Forward assists disabled vessel 149 miles off Cape Henry, Virginia

The Coast Guard assisted two people aboard a 67-foot commercial fishing vessel 149 miles east of Cape Henry, Thursday. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads received the initial call Wednesday afternoon from the vessel, F.V Hope and Sydney, who stated its engine was excessively burning oil and would not be able to make it back to shore. >click to read<

The New England groundfish debacle (Part III): who or what is at fault? Nils E. Stolpe/FishNet

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
