Boothbay Harbor lobster boat sinks, raised with lots of help

In the early morning hours of Thanksgiving Day, Andy Page’s boat, F/V Sea Star sank at the Boothbay Harbor town dock. Efforts to raise the boat were not able to happen until Friday morning. Bruce White of Sea Tow along with many fellow fishermen worked through the morning placing airbags and eventually pumps to re-float the vessel. The first attempt was unsuccessful as an airbag failed. 4 men rescued from sinking F/V Sea Star speak out

Four people were rescued from a sinking boat about 18 miles off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard Wednesday night, according to the Coast Guard. A Coast Guard aircrew airlifted four fishermen into a helicopter around 6:20 p.m. Captain Andrew Arnett told NBC 10 News he was sleeping when his crew members awoke him to news that the boat was about to sink. “No longer than 30 seconds after I got up, we’d taken a wave over the stern,” Arnett said. The four fishermen — Arnett, Roberto Fredette, Brandon McCrave and Breck Holdredge — were returning from a five-day trip crab fishing when the boat began taking on water. >click to read< 08:07

Coast Guard Saves Four Fishermen from sinking New Bedford Fishing Vessel

A New Bedford-based fishing vessel sank Wednesday night off Martha’s Vineyard, but its crew of four is fine thanks to their fast action in taking safety measures, the Coast Guard said. The New England groundfish debacle (Part III): who or what is at fault? Nils E. Stolpe/FishNet

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
