Snow crab fishermen plead guilty for failing to accurately report catch weight

A number of snow crab fishers pleaded guilty in a P.E.I. court Thursday to violations of the Fisheries Act following a Department of Fisheries and Oceans investigation of landings at a Souris wharf in recent years. A total of 13 people are charged. The three fishermen in court in Georgetown Thursday pleaded guilty to charges of failing to accurately report the weight of their catches of snow crab in accordance with the Fisheries Act. Also pleading guilty was a woman who worked on the dock monitoring crab catches. Court heard the fishers unloaded the catches in Souris between June of 2019 and May of 2020 at Souris wharf. >click to read< 19:12

Turbot fisherman fined $7,500 for excessive catch

turbot-ap A fisherman from Seldom has been convicted for exceeding trip limits for fishing Turbot and failing to accurately report the amount of gear fished. Joey Leyte was convicted in Gander provincial court in May for breaching two counts of the fishery regulations, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans said in a statement Tuesday. He was fined $5,000 for failing to accurately complete his fishing log on a daily basis. Leyte was also fined $2,500 and had to forfeit $4,742 for the value of fish exceeded on his trip. It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
