Investigation results released after fatal herring boat sinking

The chain of events that led to a fishing boat sinking off Cape Lazo have been released. Back on March 6, 2017, the Miss Cory had been fishing for herring in the Strait of Georgia after sailing out of Comox for the fishery opening that day. The fishing boat was 19.5 metres in length, and based out of Prince Rupert. It had sent out a distress call around 4:30 p.m. in the afternoon, at a location around five and a half kilometres out from Cape Lazo. At the time of the sinking, four crew members were rescued by a nearby vessel, the Proud Venture. Harper Government Helps Make BC Fishing Industry Safer

DFO SidebarWai Young, Member of Parliament for Vancouver South, on behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, announced today that the Government of Canada is investing $262,000 in Fish SAFE, a BC fishing industry driven program that works to improve safety on board commercial fishing vessels. West coast sees decline in fishing fatalities, says TSB

863a4ac9dc_64635696_o2Fatalities in British Columbia’s fishing sector have declined sharply over the past decade, according to new information from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB). Statistics from the board state that the west coast has seen an average of 2.33 deaths per year in its fishing industry since 2004 — a decline from 4.16 in previous years. Read more here  13:54

A safety program created for fishermen and delivered by fishermen test piloted in British Columbia

FISH SAFE has helped to move forward a culture of safety and helped fishermen in British Columbia to see where the safety shortcomings are on their own vessels. But the idea has always been that this is a program that could benefit the fishing industry in all of Canada. With this in mind, this week and part of next week, a version of the program – Safest Catch Nova Scotia – is undergoing a pilot project on the East Coast of the country, with some training and execution of the program happening in southwestern Nova Scotia, including in Yarmouth and Digby counties. more@ycvanguard  www.fishsafebc.com 14:16
