Report: Gloucester landings down, but worth more – Haddock Skyrockets

The value of those 2014 Gloucester landings, however, actually rose to $46 million in 2014 from $42 million the previous year. The report showed landings of Atlantic cod — which declined more than 50 percent in 2013 — rose about 4 percent, or 180,000 pounds, to 5.2 million pounds in 2014. Cape ports land more fish, but value slips

CHATHAM — Local fish landings were up last year, but value was down, according to a federal report released Thursday. Commercial fishermen landed 20 million pounds in the Provincetown-Chatham area in 2014, a notable increase over the 14 million pounds landed the previous year, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Marine Fisheries Service reported in “Fisheries of the United States 2014.” Compared with all other U.S. ports, the Provincetown-Chatham area ranked 42 in value and 43 in landings. It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
