Colourful look back at Folkestone Trawler Race as organisers announce new date

Folkestone’s Historic Trawler Race is set to take place at the end of July with what promises to be a fun and entertaining weekend. The race is held in support of the local fishermen and to celebrate the magnitude of the towns rich fishing history. The ‘Trawler’ race is set to take place on Saturday, July 30, with a home-made raft race taking place on Sunday, July 31. Folkestone Trawler Race 2017 details as fishermen prepare for events

Trawler Race weekend is almost upon us again as Folkestone’s fishing quarter prepares for its two biggest days in the year. A new addition is coming to the festival on Saturday and Sunday which is expected to be watched by thousands of people from The Stade and the Harbour Arm – as the town celebrates its fishing heritage. The trawlers will set off for the historic race on Saturday with entertainment starting from midday and the race getting under way at 2pm. click here to read the story 13:40

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
