8 more wild salmon restoration projects to receive funding in B.C.
Fisheries Minister Bernadette Jordan addressed the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade on Tuesday, saying climate change and increasing demand for seafood products has put unprecedented pressure on Pacific wild salmon. The latest projects will receive about $10.5 million from the joint federal and provincial fund established in 2018 to help the recovery of stocks in steep decline.,,, “Speaking to British Columbians, I want to assure you that our government is moving ahead with the transition from open-net pens,” she said, adding Ottawa will develop a comprehensive process to ensure all voices are heard in the decision-making process. >click to read< 10:24

Alaskans know just how essential fisheries are to life in the 49th state. The seafood industry is the largest direct employer in our state, providing 60,000 jobs and generating over $5 billion for Alaska’s economy. Over 15 percent of Alaska’s working age rural residents are employed by the industry. Congressman Walter B. Jones asks Corps of Engineers for more funding to dredge Morehead City Harbor
Congressman Jones explained that the harbor’s channel has shoaled from its authorized depth of 45 feet down to 35 feet. Furthermore, the $4,855,000 provided for the project in President Obama’s Fiscal Year 2015 budget request is helpful but not sufficient to return the channel to its authorized depth. Funding announced today by the provincial government will support ongoing research into the characteristics of cod, crab and lobster populations.
Derrick Dalley, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, announced a total of $125,000 to assist projects led by the Fish, Food and Allied Workers’ (FFAW) Union. “Engaging in fisheries science initiatives is key to maintaining a sustainable fishing industry,” Dalley said. more@thetelrgram
