The seven fishermen aboard the Carolina Queen III, a 76-foot scalloping boat that set out from Norfolk, Va., had been at sea for four days when the skies darkened off the coast of the Rockaways. A powerful storm system that had already lashed the East Coast, bringing tornadoes, thunder, lightning, high winds and heavy rains, was barreling down on them. Homes had been flattened, vehicles had been tossed like Tinkertoys and trees had been ripped from their roots. At least seven people had died. Squeezed Scallops Land High Prices

carolina queen IIIWith her shrimp-colored outriggers and a home port of Seaford, Va., it wasn’t hard to wonder what a boat like Carolina Queen III was doing so far up north when she ran aground in a storm near Rockaway Inlet on Long Island last week. Turns out she was chasing the nation’s most lucrative fishery: sea scallops, which, in 2014, amounted to a $400 million market. “It’s a pretty mobile fleet,” said Deirdre Boelke, the sea scallop fishery analyst for the New England Fishery Management Council, explaining that the fishery spans an area from North Carolina to Maine, and that scallops prefer a depth of about 50 meters, or 150 feet. Breaking News: Fishing boat crew rescued after boat runs aground off Rockaway Beach

All seven crew members have been rescued from a fishing boat that ran aground off Rockaway Beach in Queens Thursday morning. They were taken off the boat using a basket from a Coast Guard helicopter above. They are uninjured and being treated near the scene. Around 2 a.m., a Coast Guard command center on Long Island received a distress call from the 76-foot scallop fishing vessel Carolina Queen III. It was taking on water with seven crewmembers aboard.
