New University of Houston graduate passes milestone without her beloved father

A bubbly personality and positive outlook quickly come across when you meet Sabrina Galloway. The University of Houston senior graduates in just days with a degree in elementary education and is getting married this fall. But many of her classmates may not have known the student beside them is a survivor.,,, In August of 2014, Sabrina was with her father, Ronnie Galloway Jr., on his shrimp boat in Galveston Bay. Her brother Cody and a deckhand were also there when a storm capsized their boat, the Mr. Anthony. Captain Galloway died. Sabrina was trapped in a compartment for hours and thought she was going to die. A charter boat fisherman cut a hole in the boat and stayed with her until she could be pulled out safely. Up From the Depths – Sabrina Galloway, Shrimper

It is a bizarrely hot, sunny day in late October and Galloway is in her usual spot, the spot she first stood in when she was 8, back when she had to climb atop a milk crate to steer, the spot she was in on that day this August when the Mr. Anthony flipped over twice, taking her father’s life and trapping her for four hours in a small compartment under the deck. Baytown, Texas – Coast Guard: 3 rescued, 1 missing from Texas shrimp boat

The U.S. Coast Guard says three crew members have been rescued from an overturned shrimp boat and it will resume a search for a missing man. A Port of Houston Fireboat crew rescued two people who were stranded on top of the boat and a woman trapped under it. It’s unclear how the boat named Mr. Anthony overturned. Authorities haven’t identified the crew members. Read more here 14:16

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
