Coast Guard Aids Commercial Fishing Vessel Taking On Water Off LBI

A crew from Coast Guard Station Barnegat Light aided the commercial fishing vessel F/V Relentless after it took on water just outside the Barnegat Inlet off Long Beach Island Sunday afternoon. The family owned and operated 74-foot East Coast scalloper/dragger is based out of Viking Village in Barnegat Light, Boatswain’s Mate Second Class Philip Augustino, who piloted the 47-foot motor lifeboat, said the station received a call directly from the fishing boat captain at 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 29. Coast Guard search suspended for missing boat fire victim near Carlsbad

The Coast Guard crews suspended their search efforts Friday for a missing Carlsbad boat fire victim at approximately 8 a.m. Missing is the owner and resident of the Relentless, a 50-foot boat that caught fire Thursday morning. >click to read< Coast Guard and local partner agency crews searched over the course of 21 hours, covering more than 600 square miles. The Coast Guard cutters arrived on scene and worked together to extinguish the boat fire while the Jayhawk helicopter crew searched for survivors. Coast Guard responds to a boat fire near Carlsbad

Coast Guard responded to a boat fire Thursday morning near Carlsbad. Coast Guard Sector San Diego watchstanders received several reports of a boat, 50 feet in length, on fire approximately seven miles off the Carlsbad coast around 9 a.m. Coast Guard watchstanders dispatched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew and diverted the Coast Guard Cutters Munro, Benjamin Bottoms and the Haddock. Four are charged with illegal commercial fishing in Dog Fish Bay.

The state has filed charges against four commercial fishermen accused of illegal harvesting salmon in a bay south of Homer. Alaska Wildlife Troopers wrote in a dispatch Monday that Eric Winslow, 61, Paul Roth, 35, and Mark Roth, 64, all of Homer, and Robert Roth, 39, of Anchor Point, are charged with working together to illegally drive salmon out of a closed area near the mouth of a creek in Dog Fish Bay into an open fishing area, where they harvested them. Altogether, 33,328 pounds of salmon were illegally harvested, according to the dispatch. >click to read<08:42

The U.S. Coast Guard towed a fishing boat on Monday after it caught fire 75 miles east of Manasquan. The command center in Staten Island was notified the 82-foot vessel “Relentless” was in distress, according to a news release from the Coast Guard today. Six people were on board the disabled boat. It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

NILS STOLPE: The New England groundfish debacle (Part IV): Is cutting back harvest really the answer?

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
