Coast Guard continues to investigate collision of F/V Pedlar and sinking of F/V Robert C

Divers finished plugging the vents of a sunken Fairhaven-based vessel Thursday near Martha’s Vineyard to avoid future fuel discharge, the Coast Guard said Friday. The Robert C sunk after colliding Monday with another Fairhaven-based vessel, Pedlar. At 12:08 p.m. Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England’s Command Center received a radio hail, from the sole person aboard, stating the fishing vessel Robert C was taking on water 1 1/2 miles northwest of Menemsha after a collision between the fishing vessel Pedlar and Robert C, both home-ported in Fairhaven. One Dragger Sinks, Another Damaged In Mishap Off Dogfish Bar

According to Menemsha harbor master Dennis Jason, the Robert C, a dragger from Fairhaven, went down in 40 to 50 feet of water. The operator was rescued by a nearby lobster boat. The Robert C is registered to Douglas Soares of Fairhaven.The other boat involved was Pedlar, a 42-foot wooden fishing vessel also out of Fairhaven and owned by Walter Dixon, according to U.S. Coast Guard records. Mr. Jason said because of extensive damage to the bow of Pedlar, it appeared to be a near head-on collision. Read the rest here 09:05

The New England groundfish debacle (Part III): who or what is at fault? Nils E. Stolpe/FishNet

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
