Mayport shrimpers rode out storm on board their vessels in Jacksonville

Sixty-year-old Charles Long road out the storm with other shrimp fisherman and a lone grouper fisherman who moored about 20 boats in the St. John’s River near the Maxwell House building in downtown Jacksonville. Long, who told his girlfriend of 25 years that fishing comes before ladies — and everything — said weathering the storm on the 75-foot boat named “Judge” was a breeze. “Just another storm,” said the man who has been hauling in shrimp for 42 years. “We fared good. It all worked out. “ If history repeats itself as it has for the past four decades, it should work out very well for Long. Coast Guard responding to F/V Sea King – taking on water with four people aboard off Ponte Vedra, Fla.

ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. – Coast Guard boat and helicopter crews are en route to rescue four people aboard a sinking shrimp boat about 2 miles east of Ponte Vedra, Fla., Tuesday morning. more@uscgnews Update: – Flooding is now under control on the 88-foot shrimp boat that was taking on water. Coast Guardsmen passed a dewatering pump to the vessel and are using it and the Sea King’s dewatering pump to keep up with the flooding. All four people remain aboard. The Sea King is expected to arrive in Mayport Tuesday afternoon. 11:20

The New England groundfish debacle (Part III): who or what is at fault? Nils E. Stolpe/FishNet

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
