F/V Westward scuttled. She caught a lotta fish, and will for eternity.

The F/V Westward , whose long career focused on catching fish, will now be attracting them. Fuller Marine Services reports the vessel was towed out of Boothbay Harbor, where it has languished for the past few years, and sunk in 100 fathoms of water. Chuck Fuller provided the following statement, as well as photos. “On Saturday, February 6, towed the Westward 32 nautical miles offshore and scuttled her. All pollutants, machinery, and floating material had been removed and the fuel and oil tanks had been cleaned. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued the permit for the specific location after consulting with local fishermen. Read the story here 12:45

Westward is Portland-bound – In Boothbay Harbor, it’s two strikes and you’re out

The F/V Westward, which has been moored in Boothbay Harbor since 2012, appears to be headed to Portland after its latest mishap has left it without a mooring. Early Friday, Jan. 9, the Westward broke loose in high winds from the Boothbay Harbor Shipyard mooring where it has been secured for most of the last two years. It then drifted shoreward and ran aground near the shipyard. Read the rest here 16:38

The New England groundfish debacle (Part III): who or what is at fault? Nils E. Stolpe/FishNet

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
