Best boot? A commercial fisherman’s likes and dislikes.

After six weeks away from home fishing in Bristol Bay, you’d think I would have larger concerns than what to wear on my feet. However, as go the feet, so go I. Consequently, here’s my rundown of my likes and dislikes when it comes to boots. No doubt in Bristol Bay, hip boots and Xtratufs ruled my world. Xtratufs are the foot gear of choice for most commercial fishermen working the deck of a boat. They’re a good boot, but much of the reason they are so popular is marketing. The cannery stores carry Xtratufs exclusively. The reality is that though they are well made, Xtratufs have little ankle support. They are soft, and woe to the fisherman who drops an anchor on his toe. click here to read the story 15:49

The Grundens Herkules Bib Pants and Ragnar Jacket are designed to keep the wind and water from interfering with sport, commercial, and onshore fishing activities. As the company’s story goes, around a century ago a Swede named Carl Grundén, the son of a fisherman, began to manufacture water-repellent garments to withstand the forces of nature. Grundens rain gear might be a bit of an unconventional review for these pages since it’s unlike other products we review and we’re not going out on the water, but that doesn’t mean we can’t find a use for what, at least at first blush, seem to be some very fine products. Grundens Deck-Boss Boot wins Miami Boat Show Innovation Award

Grundéns, producer of the world’s leading foul weather gear, was recognized with an Innovation Award today at the 2017 Miami Boat Show for its new 15-inch Deck-Boss Boot.
