Nova Scotia MP questions Chinese ‘control’ over lobster industry – Exporter calls claims ‘kind of racist’

“My concern overall is the growing influence of China and the control of our lobster industry itself and that’s throughout the supply chain,” said Rick Perkins, the Conservative MP for South Shore -St. Margarets, where lobster fishing is a cornerstone of the economy. Perkins raised the issue recently at a parliamentary committee looking into foreign ownership and corporate concentration of commercial fishing in Canada. “What about China? I know, for example, on the South Shore, I’m seeing China buy our buyers. What’s the impact of that? Operation Lobster set to commence at Halifax Stanfield International Airport

Millions of dollars worth of Nova Scotia seafood will be shipped overseas again this holiday season and, once again, Halifax Stanfield International Airport will play a key role in the huge operation. Indeed, due to the success of the cargo business at Halifax Stanfield, a new 17,000 square metre cargo pad has been built for these freighter’s to utilize. “This time of the year is the busiest for our cargo business,” says Bert van der Stege, Halifax International Airport Authority (HIAA) vice president, business development and chief commercial officer.  “Each cargo flight that leaves Halifax Stanfield generates approximately $1 million in new exports for the province.  “The cargo freighters have already started their holiday schedules and once the month of December is complete we estimate more the $15 million in lobster will have been sent from Halifax Stanfield.” Read the story here 10:21

’Tis the season for flying Christmas crustaceans – Airport gears up for lobster season

Holiday shipments of live lobster begin this weekend at Halifax Stanfield International Airport and will continue for about a month. Several carriers have cargo jets slated to transport hundreds of tonnes of the fresh seafood around the globe in the coming weeks, the Halifax International Airport Authority said Friday.
