Seized Dominican boats to be allocated to Dorian-impacted fishers
The boats that the government seized from Dominican poachers over the years are being allocated to fishermen from Abaco and Grand Bahama who have been impacted by Hurricane Dorian, Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources Michael Pintard revealed. Hurricane Dorian ‘Totally Destroys’ 80% Of Fishing Industry
Fishermen yesterday said Hurricane Dorian had “totally destroyed” 80 percent of the industry in Abaco and Grand Bahama amid uncertainty over how the government will aid recovery. “Eighty percent of the fisheries sector in Grand Bahama and Abaco is totally destroyed. Hurricane Dorian is a Category 2 storm with winds estimated at 160 km/h and gusts of up to 190 km/h, according to the National Hurricane Centre. A crane on South Park Street — a busy roadway in downtown Halifax — snapped in several places from the power of the wind. Virginia: Dorian triggers emergency shutdown of oyster, clam fisheries
The State Health Commissioner ordered several area waterways closed to shellfishing because of the effects of Hurricane Dorian. Fishermen in the shrimp industry say the impending storm could blow away profits on the eve of the height of their season.
