Inshore Fishermen Seek Aid Package

The National Inshore Fishermen’s Association (NIFA) has warned that its members will be forced to tie up to piers “long term” due to a combination of factors. “It would have been difficult to envisage the dire situation facing inshore fishermen currently could worsen but it did so, culminating in the almost complete loss of yet another fishery so important to our economic viability,” NIFA said in a statement. Fishermen to stage protest in Dublin to highlight threat to income from Brexit and EU fish quota cuts

The protest will take place on Wednesday, June 23 and will include boats from Dublin, Louth, Donegal, Wexford, Waterford, Kerry, Cork and other counties.,, Irish fishing groups warned their livelihoods are now at stake because of quota cutbacks and the impact of the Brexit deal. “We want a renegotiation of EU Common Fisheries Policy so that Ireland is allocated a fair share of fish quotas that reflect the contribution of our fishing grounds to the EU,” a spokesperson said. Kerry fishermen renew call for immediate seal cull

The fishermen are operating on the Dingle Peninsula, a region which has one of the largest grey seal colonies in the country.  Seals are protected under the EU Habitats Directive and the Wildlife Acts. Conservationists say the Irish colonies of grey seals are of international importance. Dingle fisherman Liam Flannery says that seals are actively following their boats now and that fishing for inshore fishermen like himself is now unviable.  >click to read< 14:00

Fishermen hold protest in St. Anthony

During a peaceful protest, the group was able to halt crews from working on the docked factory freezer Ocean Prawns. Similar to a protest held earlier this year in Corner Brook, fishermen are asking the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) to reconsider the policy, (LIFO) which saw inshore fishermen shoulder 90 per cent of a 10,000-tonne cut in 2014. Federal Fisheries Minister Gail Shea refuses to budge on inshore shrimp cuts

Federal Fisheries Minister Gail Shea stood her ground Tuesday on controversial quota reductions that will cut most deeply among inshore fishermen, and admonished Newfoundland and Labrador for an unfulfilled promise to rationalize the processing sector. “We believe we are looking at plant closures.
